Google's password manager now has the ability to add notes to passwords.

The change was announced as part of the January Google Play system updates and is now widely rolled out users. When you open any of your passwords, you'll see a new 'add a note' field.

The Password Manager is available from Google's autofill settings or from your Chrome browser settings.

Thanks for the tip @AssembleDebug

Google Tasks app finally got a Material You redesign with dynamic colors.

First, the bottom bar now uses a component from the Material Design 3 library, with the task creation button on the right and all other elements on the left. Second, all the bottom pop-up dialogs got more rounded edges. The window for choosing light or dark theme was also updated.

Calendar and Time Pickers components have also been updated.

This change became available with the new version of the app v.2023.01.30.50551367.0-release.

Imported Google Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a, 7, 7 Pro, but no support for VoLTE and VoWiFi on your local carriers? There is a non-root solution!

Usually, when you buy a phone that is not officially sold in your country, it cannot work with IMS services of local carriers. Experienced users are used to install Magisk modules, which add the necessary files to the firmware.

However, Korean developer kyujin-cho wrote an app that allows you to enable VoLTE and VoWiFi support on the Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a, 7 and 7 Pro without root access using Shizuku!

In short, all you need to do is to configure Shizuku, install 'PixelIMS' app, activate VoLTE in it and reboot the device a couple of times. Then check the IMS status in the internal menu by dialing the code *#*#4636#*#* in the dialer.

How to change the name of the carrier's network without root access?

Following the enabling of VoLTE and VoWiFi without root access, Kuba Wojciechowski discovered that the same way you can override the name of the carrier's network. What is needed for this?

1. Configure Shizuku (Guide)
2. Download and install the 'Carrier Vanity Name' (GitHub) app by Kuba Wojciechowski.
3. Open the app and give permission to access Shizuku.
4. Enter the desired name and press 'Set'. To return the default title, press 'Reset'.

You can even use emoji as an inscription.

Android 14 Developer Preview 1 is out!

Even earlier than last year, Google is publishing the first developer build of the upcoming Android 14 update. A total of 2 Developer Previews and 5 Beta versions are planned (this number may increase). Starting with the third Beta, the development team will work on the platform stability.

Android 14 Developer Preview 1 is available for Pixel 4a (5G) and newer. This means that the Pixel 4a will not receive the next major Android update.

Developer Preview builds are only available for manual installation and are recommended for developers only.

Build: UPP1.230113.009
Security patch level: February 2023

As always, I’ll be digging through the latest Android release to find what’s new. Google’s blog post on Android 14 DP1 makes it sound like there aren’t changes (to be fair, it’s aimed at developers), but as always, there are a LOT of new features and changes. Since this digging is a very involved process, and for my own sanity, if you want to see what’s new in Android 14 DP1, check out my constantly updated thread on Twitter for all the details!

The settings are starting to update the switches.

Settings is starting to update the MD3 switches.

The switches we see now are essentially an early version of them. Google introduced the new Material Design 3 Switches in the alpha channel a year ago, which then became stable closer to mid-autumn. So far, Google hasn't been in as much of a hurry to implement them in its apps, but we're already seeing the first steps in the Android Settings app.

So far, the new toggles can be found on the permission request page, "App info" and 'App notifications' settings. Most likely it's all part of the refactoring of the settings app, codenamed 'SPA'.

Fast Pair settings are back.

This page first appeared in Android 13 Developer Preview 2, and then disappeared in beta 3. It hasn't undergone any changes since then.

For now Fast Pair is a part of Google Play Services, but a year ago Google started working on its implementation in AOSP by making this function a Mainline module (updatable via Google Play system updates).

What the predictive back gesture inside apps looks like.

Starting with Android 14, the predictive back gesture will be able to show a preview of the screen where you will go when you complete the gesture. This means you'll know if you'll get to the home screen, the previous page in the app, or even another app.

For now, this behavior is disabled by default and you won't be able to test it just by installing Developer Preview 1.

Changes in Battery Usage statistics and settings.

Battery Usage
:
• Returned a separate indicator of screen time since the last full charge of the device.
• It is now possible to 'breakdown' the usage by apps and by system components. Earlier they were just sorted under each other.

Battery saver settings:
• You can now select the default power saving mode. That is, you no longer need to open the settings page to activate emergency power saving.
• Also, there is a 'Adaptive battery' switch, which was moved from the Adaptive Preferences page.

• The schedule item has been renamed "Schedule and reminder." The usage-based option is gone. The lower threshold for automatic turn on has been raised from 10 to 20%. There is a new "Battery Saver Reminders" switch.

Google plans to allow clone apps.

Right now, Android doesn't have built-in support for app cloning (OEMs don't count), but that could change with the release of Android 14. Google is testing a new "Cloned apps" feature that will allow you to "create a second instance of the app so you can use two accounts at the same time." This feature will be available under Settings > Apps > Cloned apps.

For now, the feature is not available by default. Moreover, it is not yet complete, as the system does not currently provide any distinctive icons to display in the launcher, so the original and the duplicate can easily be confused.

Also, the list of apps whose duplicates can be created is limited for some reason.

Health Connect is now built into the system.

The first developer build comes with a new APEX file, which has the package name com.[google].android.healthconnect. That is, it is now a module updated via Google Play system updates.

The name of the package is in brackets for a reason, as the system version coexists next to the version from Google Play. At one point, Google will simply move the data to the system version.

Right now, however, apps are checking for the Google Play version. That is, to use the system version, you have to make changes to the apps. Google will probably just update the Health Connect support library so that developers don't have to figure out what version of the app is installed.

There is a new separate settings page under Settings > Accessibility > Hearing devices.

Previously, when you clicked this item you were immediately taken to the pair new device page. Now you have the ability to enable a shortcut to these settings and a new option "Hearing aid compatibility" which improves the audio for some devices. This page is now hidden behind a flag.

Android 14 adds a new feature called "Advanced Memory Protection" in beta.

It "helps you protect your device from bugs that may put your security at risk". Under the hood, this feature includes the Memory Tagging Extension (MTE) on Arm v8.5+ compatible devices. MTE is a mandatory hardware feature on Arm v9 processors that protects against memory safety bugs by providing detailed information about memory violations.

It's worth noting the Tensor G2 chipset in the Google Pixel 7 uses Arm v8.2 processor cores, so it do not supports MTE. It looks like the Google Pixel 8 will use the new Arm v9 processor cores.

Personal Safety app prepares a redesign with a new settings navigation.

The settings page elements will be divided into two new tabs, "Features" and "Your Info," thereby giving the app a bottom navigation bar. In landscape mode, as in other Google apps updates, the app uses the Navigation Rail component.

Google is probably still tweaking the new design, because for some reason it uses pink as the default accent color, regardless of the current theme. This change is not yet available to end users.
