Opossums do not consciously play dead. They enter a behavior called thanatosis when threatened. It is an involuntary response to extreme stress. During thanatosis, opossums become limp, slow their breathing, and remain motionless. Their eyes may stay open, and they can release a foul smell. This state can last from a few minutes to several hours. Opossums cannot end thanatosis at will. It is triggered automatically by fear or danger from predators. Scientists describe it as a defensive survival behavior. It is not fainting although it looks a bit similar.

Some studies found that this recognition could persist for years, allowing crows to distinguish between familiar and threatening human faces.
