Suicide was a crime in England and Wales until 1961. Before that, people who survived a suicide attempt could be prosecuted, fined, or sent to prison, with some cases from the 1920s–1950s resulting in short jail sentences.
In earlier centuries, suicide was treated as a sin and a crime. Families could also lose property after a death by suicide.
The law changed in 1961, when suicide was decriminalised and responses shifted toward medical and mental health care instead of punishment.
