An RF mixer is a device that multiplies two signals together, producing new signals at both the sum and difference of their frequencies. This simple idea is the foundation of superheterodyne radios, which have been the dominant radio design for over a century. The radio receives an incoming signal, mixes it with a second internally-generated frequency, and the result is a new, easier-to-handle frequency called the Intermediate Frequency (IF), which the rest of the radio then processes. In practice, mixers are often built using diodes, but the core concept is straightforward: multiply two signals, get new frequencies out.
