Boycott was a man so hated that his last name ended up in the dictionary.

The term originates from Charles Cunningham Boycott, an English land agent managing estates in County Mayo, Ireland, in 1880.

When he attempted to evict tenants and collect high rents during an agricultural crisis, the local community responded by collectively ostracizing him. Tenants refused to work for him, local merchants stopped selling to him, and even the postal worker would not deliver his mail.

This highly effective, nonviolent tactic of social and commercial isolation forced him to flee back to England. The strategy took his name and is now defined as the act of abstaining from relations or commerce to express protest.
