Julie d’Aubigny (La Maupin) was a 17th-century French opera singer who performed at the Paris Opera in the late 1600s. She was a skilled swordswoman who fought illegal duels and killed a man in one, after which she was pardoned by the king of France. She was bisexual and had a public relationship with a woman, which caused a scandal in Paris society. She also faked her lovers death by using the corps of a dead nun and lighting the room on fire.
