“Hector the Convector” is a giant thunderstorm that forms over Australia’s Tiwi Islands at around 3 p.m. local time, most often between September and December. No other thunderstorm system is known to match its combination of repeated location and daily timing during this season. Sea breezes collide over the islands and push warm, moist air upward, creating the storm. WWII pilots reportedly used the cloud as a navigation landmark. The storm can grow up to 20 km high and can be seen from Darwin, about 100 km away.
