Turkmenistan's "Gates of Hell" (officially the Darvaza gas crater) is a 70m wide and 30m deep pit in the Karakum Desert. Created in 1971 when a Soviet drilling rig collapsed into an underground methane cavern, it was set ablaze to prevent toxic gas from spreading, but has remarkably continued to burn for over five decades.
