Falando específicamente de submarinos usandos na Primeira e Segunda Guerra Mundial, a vida não era muito diferente de um soldado nas trincheiras. Era muito quente, frequentemente passando dos 40°C internamente, muito úmido, até roupas limpas ficavam molhadas. Fedia muito, uma mistura de fedor humano com fezes (os banheiros nos submarinos eram terríveis na época) com gasolina e óleo mecânico. E sem espaço pessoal nenhum além da altissima mortalidade (durante a Primeira Guerra Mundial, os tripulantes de submarinos tiveram uma mortalidade de mais de 50%).

Mas por incrível que pareça, mesmo com uma situação insalubre o moral dessas tripulação eram mil vezes maiores do que dos navios de guerra, pelo fato dos comandantes viverem nas mesmas condições dos soldados e não terem luxos exagerados ou aquele distância gigante da tripulação que havia nos navios.
