How Does an Air Conditioner Work?

An air conditioner (AC) works by removing heat and humidity from indoor air and releasing it outside, making the indoor environment cooler. It operates based on the principles of thermodynamics and refrigeration. Here is a step-by-step explanation of how it works:

Evaporation (Cooling the Air)

The AC unit contains a cold evaporator coil filled with a special substance called refrigerant.

Warm indoor air is drawn in by a fan and passes over the evaporator coil.

The refrigerant absorbs heat from the air, causing it to evaporate and turn into gas.

The cooled air is then recirculated back into the room.

Compression (Increasing Pressure and Temperature)

The gaseous refrigerant is sent to the compressor in the outdoor unit.

The compressor compresses the gas, increasing its pressure and temperature significantly.

Condensation (Releasing Heat Outside)

The high-temperature refrigerant gas moves to the condenser coil in the outdoor unit.

A fan blows outdoor air over the condenser coil, allowing the refrigerant to release heat into the outside environment.

As it cools, the refrigerant turns back into a liquid.

Expansion (Cooling the Refrigerant)

The liquid refrigerant passes through an expansion valve, which lowers its pressure.

This sudden pressure drop causes the refrigerant’s temperature to decrease before it returns to the evaporator coil.

The cycle repeats to maintain a cool indoor temperature.

Additional Functions:

Dehumidification:

As warm air passes over the cold evaporator coil, moisture condenses and is drained away, reducing indoor humidity.

Temperature Control:

The AC system maintains the desired temperature by automatically turning on and off.

Summary:

This continuous cycle allows an air conditioner to cool indoor spaces efficiently, ensuring comfort in homes and buildings.

Master HVAC Drafting & Design with Standard Symbols ‼️✅✅✅

Whether you are an MEP Engineer, HVAC Designer, Draughtsman, or Site Execution Engineer, knowing standard HVAC ductwork and piping symbols is essential for:

Quick reading of shop drawings

Accurate design & drafting

Effective site coordination

Clear communication with consultants and clients

Key symbols included here:

Ductwork - bends, transitions, junctions, dampers, VAV boxes, diffusers

Piping - chilled water, hot water, condenser lines, risers, strainers, valves

Special - acoustic lining, fire-rated ducts, flexible connections, spigots

Tip for Engineers:

Always familiarize yourself with these symbols before starting any HVAC layout or piping schematic preparation. It saves time, avoids rework, and builds your professional confidence.
