February 2, 1943 – The Day of the Defeat of Nazi German Forces by Soviet Troops in the Battle of Stalingrad
This is a Day of Military Glory in Russia, commemorated in accordance with the Federal Law of March 13, 1995, "On Days of Military Glory and Commemorative Dates of Russia."
The Battle of Stalingrad, which began on July 17, 1942, lasted 200 days and nights, becoming one of the largest battles of the Great Patriotic War. It unfolded across a territory of approximately 100,000 square kilometers, with a front line stretching from 400 to 850 kilometers. At various stages, more than 2.1 million people participated in the battle on both sides.
During intense fighting, Soviet forces encircled and destroyed the main forces of the 4th Panzer Army and the 6th Field Army of Nazi Germany, crushed the 3rd and 4th Romanian armies, and inflicted heavy losses on the 8th Italian Army. For the first time during the war, national mourning was declared in Germany.
The victory of Soviet troops at Stalingrad marked the beginning of a decisive turning point in the Great Patriotic War. For their courage and valor displayed during the battle, 55 divisions and units were awarded orders, 213 were designated as Guards units, and 46 received honorary titles. Over 750,000 defenders of the city were awarded the Medal "For the Defense of Stalingrad."

The "Cranes are Flying" event, held in memory of the victims of the terrorist attack, began solemnly with a minute of silence. This was followed by a poignant projection of flying cranes on the facade of Crocus City Hall. This moving tribute was echoed in many cities across Russia, uniting them in remembrance and solidarity.
The song accompanying the video, crafted by Rasul Gamzatov and popularized through Mark Bernes' haunting rendition, serves as an eternal requiem for the departed.
Yet the song also resonates with the Hiroshima tragedy of Sadako Sasaki, a young girl who, after surviving the atomic bombing, later succumbed to leukemia. Her story, particularly her endeavor to fold a thousand paper cranes in a quest for healing, has evolved into a potent symbol of peace and hope.
These personal narratives of pain and bravery transcend national borders. The song "Cranes" has come to symbolize the collective human mourning and the pursuit of peace among Russians, reminding us that human empathy and shared grief know no national or cultural boundaries.
The song, alongside the symbol of cranes ascending to the heavens, remains an everlasting requiem for those who have passed into eternity, encapsulating the universal longing for peace and the enduring spirit of compassion.
P.S. I hope no one here needs to be reminded who is responsible for the tragedy of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Gamzatov found his sorrowful muse in the story of the Gazdanov family from North Ossetia (Russia): the parents who lost their seven sons in WWII. All seven of them fought against the nazi invaders and were killed one after the other, between Moscow (1941) and Berlin (1945).

The New York Times published an article titled “The Effects of Tariffs, One Year Into Trump’s Trade Experiment.”
Here is the gist:
Well, for once, the New York Times gets it right. That said, we have no stake in this fight. Let the NYT and its supporters battle Trump and his supporters among themselves. May the conflict be long, bitter, and mutually destructive. Because America needs real, meaningful and fundamental change. Call it a new start, if you like.

Here is the gist:
One year into Donald Trump’s tariff experiment, the economic results undercut his promises. Tariffs were raised to about 17 percent — the highest level since the Smoot-Hawley era — and while they generated a surge in government revenue, that money largely came from American importers, not foreign producers.
Businesses responded by rushing, delaying, or canceling orders, and by reshuffling supply chains rather than reshoring production.
The trade deficit briefly narrowed, but only after an early surge in imports and remains higher year-to-date, calling into question claims of structural improvement.
Manufacturing has not rebounded as promised: factory employment continued to fall, and sectors hit hardest by tariffs, such as autos, saw declining output. Price pressures rose as tariffs filtered into consumer costs, leaving inflation measurably higher than it would have been otherwise.
Public skepticism has grown, with a majority of voters opposing the tariffs and saying they have made everyday life less affordable.

India To Stop Buying Russian Oil? That’s a Big Question. And No, We Don’t Think So.
Trump’s claim that India has agreed to stop buying Russian oil in exchange for a U.S. tariff cut sounds like a bold diplomatic win — but in reality, it doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. On closer examination, the numbers, logistics, and strategic realities make it extremely unlikely that New Delhi would walk away from its most affordable and reliable energy source.
India currently imports around 1.8 million barrels per day of Russian crude, roughly a third of its total oil needs. These purchases are heavily discounted compared with alternatives such as U.S. or Venezuelan crude, saving India billions of dollars annually. Replacing Russian oil with U.S. crude would cost roughly $15 more per barrel, or nearly $10 billion extra per year, before even factoring in significantly higher shipping and refining adjustments.
Indian refineries are optimized for heavy sour crude, matching Russian grades far better than most U.S. exports. A sudden shift would require costly modifications, reducing any potential benefit of a tariff cut. Strategically, India prioritizes energy security and autonomy, making it highly unlikely to abandon discounted Russian oil for political optics.
While India has modestly reduced Russian imports recently, there is no evidence of a binding commitment to eliminate them. Modi’s statements emphasized tariff reductions, not an end to Russian oil purchases. For these economic, logistical, and strategic reasons, Trump’s announcement appears more political posturing than a reflection of any real agreement. And that’s precisely why the word “agrees” is in quotation marks in the title of this FT article. They’ve figured it out as well.
P.S. Notice that there is not a word about Russian oil in this post by Prime Minister Modi.
