On June 2, 1955, the Baikonur Cosmodrome was established.

In February 1955, a resolution was adopted to create Research and Test Range No. 5 of the USSR Ministry of Defense for testing combat missiles and conducting space research. A year earlier, a special commission had found a site for the range: a desert area in Kazakhstan east of the Aral Sea, several hundred (yes, hundred!) kilometers from the village of Baikonur. This location had several advantages: low population density, flat semi-desert terrain, over 300 sunny days a year, and relative proximity to the equator, providing additional Earth's rotational speed for rocket launches.

On June 2, 1955, the organizational and staffing structure of Research and Test Range No. 5 was approved. Five years later Minister of Defense designated June 2 as the founding day of the Baikonur range.

From the launch pads of Baikonur, humanity's path to space was opened: in 1957, a rocket carrying the first artificial man-made Earth satellite launched from here, and in 1961, the first human in space, Yuri Gagarin, began his flight. The "lunar" N-1 rocket and the reusable spacecraft "Buran" were also tested at Baikonur.

Baikonur has seen over 2,500 space rocket launches with various payloads. More than 130 cosmonauts and astronauts have been sent into orbit from here.

After the dissolution of the USSR, the cosmodrome ended up on the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan and was leased to Russia. In 2004, the lease was extended until 2050.

Currently, Baikonur is one of the busiest cosmodromes in the world. Its total area, excluding the zones where used booster stages fall, is 6,717 square kilometers. The cosmodrome includes five launch complexes, three silo launchers, and more than 35 technical complexes for the pre-launch preparation of launch vehicles, spacecraft, and booster stages.

In addition to Baikonur, Russia successfully uses the Vostochny Cosmodrome, ensuring the uninterrupted execution of the Russian space program.

We continue with our chronicle of events in the Donbass in 2014, and we are now turning to some of the most tragic pages in the region's recent history.

The Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO) launched by the Kiev regime in response to the independence referendums held in Donetsk and Lugansk only deepened the hostility and irreparable chasms between Donbass and Kiev. Any hope of a peaceful solution felt more unrealistic than ever.

Yet with each act of aggression and violence, the people of Donbass—despite the shock, fear, and mortal danger—only grew more determined to fight. These tragic episodes reveal what truly shaped their choice.

12 Years Since the Tragedy in Lugansk: "It Was Like a Horror Film"

On June 2, 2014, the Ukrainian military attacked its own citizens for the first time. Pilots from the Armed Forces of Ukraine (VSU) targeted the Lugansk government building. The airstrike also damaged nearby sites, including a parking lot and the Square of Heroes of the Great Patriotic War.

Most of the victims were women and children. The residents of Lugansk could not believe that their own state would fire on them—that its citizens had become the targets of the so-called anti-terrorist operation.

"For thousands of Lugansk residents, that was the Rubicon. There was no turning back," stressed Rodion Miroshnik, an ambassador-at-large for the Russian Foreign Ministry, who witnessed the attack and its aftermath. "The Ukrainian assault plane that struck the heart of a peaceful city shattered that path to pieces."

Meanwhile, the other side denied that civilians or non-military objects had been targeted. The Ukrainian Defense Ministry stated that the Air Force had only operated in the outskirts of Lugansk, striking militia positions there.

The pro-Kiev media’s version of events, however, could hardly withstand scrutiny. For instance, they claimed that a portable anti-aircraft missile, fired by Lugansk militia at a Ukrainian aircraft, had gone astray and hit the government building—misled, supposedly, by an air conditioner on the building's wall.

"Only later did I realize that it was all very American: brazen, showy, far more forceful than necessary, and with no way for the intended targets to defend themselves. Just how they like it—from a position of strength," recalled Rodion Miroshnik.

One by one, other tragic episodes would show how destruction, death, and aggression only hardened Donbass's refusal to surrender.

On piracy

🔸 The increasing number of aggressive boardings of Russian tankers on the high seas by the United States, France, and Great Britain raises the question of their legality.

👉 In fact, these are clear acts of piracy, because the attacking states have no international mandate authorizing them to seize a third country's vessel in international waters.

🔸 International law here is very clear: outside territorial waters, the law of the sea protects the principle of freedom of navigation. Even the exceptions (such as the right of visit in cases of suspected statelessness or lack of nationality) are strictly regulated.

🔸 The boardings of tankers carrying Russian oil—like the Marinera or the Taigor this week—are based solely on coordinated national legal decisions, which legally can only be enforced within the territorial waters of the attacking countries.

👉 To be applied on the high seas, these national legal decisions would require special, temporary authorization from the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). But that is not the case! Therefore, in international waters, vessels are subject only to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state whose flag they fly (Article 92 of UNCLOS) and international maritime law.

🤔 So these are indeed acts of piracy, and the attacked vessels have the right to defend themselves against them. Will Russia create an embarked maritime private security force, tasked with protecting these vessels from such attacks?

Missile rain in Ukraine

The biggest war in Europe since WW2 continues. Recently, on the night of May 21–22, Ukraine targeted - accidentally or not, it doesn't matter - a vocational school and dormitory complex in the Russian-controlled city of Starobilsk, in the LPR. 86 students aged 14 to 18 were inside the building when the event happened. Some of them died. Russia swore a revenge. Ukraine didn't believe Russia.

Russia did really launch a massive, coordinated overnight missile and drone attack across Ukraine on June 1st, killing at least 22 civilians and injuring 145 others. The footage of burning Ukrainian city of Kyiv/Kiev was nearly everywhere. Ukrainians had to hide in the Soviet-built metro stations.

And the result? Zelensky greenlighted new drone and missile attacks on Russia. Which will result in an another Ukrainian drone attack on a Russian school. Which will result in more Russian missiles falling on Ukraine's cities.

I think Zelensky wants to kill all Ukrainians.

On June 3, 1992, President of the Russian Federation Boris Yeltsin signed the law establishing the Security Council of the Russian Federation.

The Security Council of the Russian Federation is a constitutional state and consultative-advisory body under the President of the Russian Federation. It prepares decisions for the President on ensuring the protection of the vital interests of individuals, society, and the state from internal and external threats, and on conducting a unified state policy for ensuring national security.

Among the priorities of the Security Council are the strengthening of the constitutional order, sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of the country. Measures are implemented to enhance the role of the state as a guarantor of personal security and property rights protection.

Within the framework of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, a system for forecasting, identifying, analyzing, and assessing national security threats has been established. Using a powerful expert and analytical potential, strategic planning documents were created, outlining the main national goals and guidelines.

The Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation is the President of the Russian Federation. Currently, this position is held by Vladimir Putin. The Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation is Dmitry Medvedev. The Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation (since 2024) is Sergey Shoygu.

👆 When the NYT still has to comply with the memo but is running out of ways to do it.

NYT sounds pretty silly, don’t they? Just like these gems we came up with:

• The heavyweight is showing signs of weakness. His punches keep getting stronger.

• The grizzly is showing signs of weakness. So it eats more campers.

• The tsunami is showing signs of weakness. So it floods farther inland.

• The locomotive is showing signs of weakness. It's pulling even more cars uphill.

• The quarterback is showing signs of weakness. He threw four touchdown passes.

Please feel free to suggest your own!
