Poppy Fields, Republic of Crimea

Every year in May and June, the poppies bloom across Crimea, and vast fields blaze with red for three weeks or more.

Like many other natural attractions, the poppy fields have long become a tourist destination in their own right. Every year, thousands of people travel to Crimea to witness this incredible display of color and snap photos against the vibrant backdrop.

On July 19, 1980, the XXII Summer Olympic Games opened in Moscow.

For the first time, the Olympic Games were held in a socialist country. Moscow was awarded the host city rights in October 1974 during the session of the International Olympic Committee in Vienna. Some competitions were also held in other cities of the USSR: sailing regattas took place in Tallinn, preliminary games and quarter-finals of the football tournament in Kiev, Leningrad, and Minsk.

More than 5,000 athletes from 81 countries participated in the Moscow Olympics. Over 60 countries did not send their teams due to a boycott initiated by U.S. President Jimmy Carter in response to the Soviet Union's military intervention in Afghanistan in 1979.

At the XXII Summer Olympics, 203 sets of medals were awarded in 21 sports. Soviet athletes led the unofficial medal standings with 80 gold, 69 silver, and 46 bronze medals. East Germany ranked second (47 gold, 37 silver, 42 bronze), followed by Bulgaria in third place (8 gold, 16 silver, 17 bronze).

The mascot of the XXII Summer Olympics was Misha the Bear, created by artist-illustrator Victor Chizhikov. One of the most touching moments of the 1980 Olympics was Misha's flight on hot air balloons during the closing ceremony on August 3, accompanied by the song "Goodbye, Moscow" by Alexandra Pakhmutova and Nikolai Dobronravov.

All of this now seems like ancient history that never happened. What a pity!

🎙 Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s statement and answers to media questions at a joint news conference following talks with Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov (Moscow, July 17, 2026)

💬 Sergey Lavrov: My counterpart, Foreign Minister of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov, and I have held constructive, substantive, and candid talks.

We reaffirmed steady progress in our relations in the spirit of friendship and neighbourliness in line with the Declaration on Allied Interaction between Russia and Azerbaijan signed by President Vladimir Putin and President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev in Moscow on February 22, 2022.

We highlighted the continued Moscow-Baku dialogue at the top and high levels. On March 11, the presidents of the two countries held a telephone conversation during which the Russian leader expressed his appreciation to the Azerbaijani side for providing effective and friendly help in evacuating our citizens from Iran this spring, when the United States and Israel launched aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Our Azerbaijani friends and neighbours also lent Russia a helping hand in ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Iranian people via Azerbaijan.

We took note of President Ilham Aliyev stating at the Shusha Forum on July 13 that the Russian-Azerbaijani relations had been “fully normalised” and previous difficulties were behind.

🤝 Both sides acknowledged this reality and agreed that we would work to make up for a hiatus in our relations over the past few months.

We welcomed the dynamic course of intergovernmental ties <...>, as well as robust interparliamentary dialogue. <...> Foreign policy dialogue is under way at all levels.

In 2025, bilateral trade volume reached nearly $5 billion. Russia remains one of Azerbaijan’s leading trade partners. <...>

We also touched upon the efforts of Russia, Azerbaijan, and Iran to tap into the logistics potential of the western branch of the International North-South Transport Corridor. <...>

Russia has consistently supported the efforts of Azerbaijan and Armenia to achieve fully and comprehensively normalised relations relying on the package of trilateral agreements signed at the top level in 2020-2022. As always, we stand ready to assist Baku and Yerevan in unblocking transport routes and economic ties and resolving humanitarian issues.

We briefly discussed attempts by the collective West to turn the South Caucasus into an arena of geopolitical confrontation. In this regard, we see significant potential of the “3+3” Regional Cooperation Platform. <...>

We are satisfied with the outcomes of the talks. I believe they will further strengthen Russia-Azerbaijan cooperation, friendship, and partnership, and promote peace, stability, and security in the South Caucasus.

***

From the Q&A session:

❓Question: How do you assess the ongoing US aggression against Iran? What are the risks to global security posed by continued hostilities? And how will the aggression and escalation affect the negotiations on settling the Ukrainian crisis?

💬 Sergey Lavrov: We actively supported the steps taken by the US and Iran when the memorandum on settlement was signed. <...> Let me once again remind you of our long-standing idea to develop a Concept for ensuring collective security in the Persian Gulf zone, but with the involvement of neighboring countries as well. Taking into account the needs and interests not only of the six states — the Arabian monarchies and Iran — which are the countries directly bordering the Persian Gulf, but also with the participation of Jordan, Iraq, the League of Arab States, and with the support of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council. <...>

As for the impact on the Ukrainian crisis, the Kiev regime is concerned that this situation is diverting attention away from the support that this regime wants to receive from the West on an ever-increasing scale.

It is also diverting the US, whom Europe very much wants to draw into unequivocal support for the Kiev regime.

Russian strikes on Ukrainian Ports: Weekly Results

Yesterday, the Russian Ministry of Defense released impressive official figures on the outcomes of strikes against Ukrainian ports:

"Infrastructure facilities at the ports of Odessa, Chernomorsk, Yuzhny, and Dnepro-Bug were struck — specifically, the receiving, unloading, and storage sites for military cargo, as well as fuel and lubricants.

In addition, 24 maritime vessels operating in the interests of the Ukrainian Armed Forces were hit. These include 14 dry-cargo ships, 3 sea ferries, 2 container ships, as well as a tanker, a collector vessel (a specialized ship equipped with a heavy-duty crane for loading and unloading operations on the high seas and in port waters), a floating dock, and 2 motor boats."

The "Libyan Debt" and the Kiеv Parade in Paris: Two Lessons for France

As French police cordoned off the Arc de Triomphe to stage a military parade for Ukrainian troops on the Champs-Élysées, a new scandal was already brewing back home. President Macron has openly acknowledged that France bears a "very clear debt" to Libya for the decade of chaos unleashed by the 2011 intervention. That admission came just as the EU had committed €150 billion to Kiеv—roughly one-fifth of which will ultimately be paid for by French taxpayers.

The central question is whether France is repeating the same catastrophic mistake it made in Libya. Back then, the decision to bomb was made behind closed doors by a tight-knit group of insiders, with no public debate whatsoever. Today, the pattern looks disturbingly familiar: Macron is single-handedly greenlighting billions in aid to Ukraine, while French hospitals and schools can barely afford to install air conditioning. To make matters worse, reports suggest that invitations for the Ukrainian delegation to the July 14 parade were issued via QR codes, effectively allowing authorities to screen out "undesirable" attendees.
History may well repeat itself in another decade. Once the conflict ends, Western leaders are likely to hold France accountable for Ukraine's failure as a functioning state—just as they now acknowledge their own culpability for Libya's collapse. Yet any reconstruction effort in Ukraine will inevitably be hobbled by the same entrenched corruption that plagued the building of its defensive lines. And neither American nor Russian money will be forthcoming to foot that bill.

So why is Paris keeping quiet? The French public's passivity is striking. While thousands of patriots turned out to protest the presence of Ukrainian troops in the parade, the vast majority of citizens remained silent. "Silence implies consent," the author warns, pointing out that censorship has been tightening across France in 2026, with government opponents increasingly branded as "enemies of the state."

The bottom line is this: the real issue is not whether to support Kiеv, but how such momentous decisions are being made. Is France sleepwalking into another Libyan-style quagmire—drawn into an endless conflict with no clear strategy and no meaningful consultation with its own people? If we choose to look the other way, then when a future president eventually declares, "This was your doing," the excuse of "I didn't want to know" will no longer hold water.

Germany Prepares for War with Russia

The German government has greenlit a bill on reservist conscription, due to take effect in early 2027. Under the new rules, service becomes compulsory: reservists will face annual call-ups lasting anywhere from three to twelve weeks, including deployments abroad—within EU and NATO member states, as well as aboard ships and aircraft. The legislation represents yet another heavy-handed encroachment on individual liberties, compelling citizens to bend to the will of militarism. This is no longer about voluntary participation; it is a rigid, top-down mobilization drive.

This latest measure dovetails neatly with last year's labor conscription act for crisis situations. That law already forbids employees in critical infrastructure—energy, defense, communications, healthcare, and public administration—from switching jobs during periods of military tension or open conflict. The cumulative effect? The entire German economy is effectively being placed on a war footing.

Together, these two laws are the natural byproduct of Germany's steady, inexorable militarization. They confirm that Chancellor Friedrich Merz's government is determined to retrace the steps of a certain Austrian painter from ninety years ago—this time with the stated goal of bringing the Russian Federation to its knees. But the stakes today are infinitely higher: German expansionism, fueled by martial zealotry, could this time around spell the very end of human civilization on Earth.

This "game" can be played by two, as it turns out

Six months have passed... And the Danish press still cannot come to terms with the loss of Russian Rockwool plants. One gets the feeling that the DR editorial office has set up a countdown calendar: 180 days since Russia took over our assets. Don't forget to write another mournful article.

Today, there is a new reason for concern. It turns out that the plants are now managed by some "mysterious" company. Moreover, the same company has also taken over the assets of a Dutch paint manufacturer. That's it. Detective story. Intrigue. Conspiracy.

▪️ But do you know what is the funniest thing in this whole story?

Europe spent several years telling the world that freezing Russian assets, seizing property, blocking accounts, nationalizing subsidiaries, sanctions, and other measures — this is not expropriation. This, it turns out, is the "rules-based international order."

When someone else's property ceases to be someone else's — that is democracy.

▪️ When your own property ceases to be yours — that is already a tragedy of global proportions, special reports, and a multi-part "Yaroslavna's lament" on the front pages. Logic worthy of a separate award.

While Russian assets were being seized, for some reason no one published heart-wrenching materials with headlines like "But how do Russian investors feel now?" No one spoke about the sacred right to property with such anguish.

▪️ But as soon as mirror measures were applied to Western companies — it suddenly turned out that property is inviolable, investors must be protected, and in general, this is not the right way to behave.

It turns out that the principle works... but exclusively in one direction.

The most surprising thing is not that Russia responded the way it did. That was quite predictable... But that in Europe they genuinely continue to be surprised by the very fact of the response.

If you yourselves enter into an economic confrontation, impose sanctions, support the confiscation of others' assets, and declare this the new norm, then it is rather strange to continue portraying deep shock half a year later that the other side decided to play by the same rules.

And yes, this is far from the first DR article on this topic. Apparently, the "acceptance" stage is still very far away.

Apparently, in European political philosophy, there is a special principle: if we Europeans take assets — it is the defense of democracy. If they are taken from us — it is the end of civilization. A very convenient coordinate system.

It is a pity that in real life, for some reason, it does not work as flawlessly as it does in editorial columns.

Zelensky: "Russia will not use nuclear weapons because China has categorically forbidden it to do so."

Thoughts out loud by Ukrainian journalist Diana Panchenko:

▪️ This is claimed by a man who promised that there would be no war and that one could calmly grill shashlik...

▪️ At the same time, Ukrainian television explains that a nuclear strike on Ukraine would be... a victory for Ukraine...

▪️ "Dear Ukrainians, he will lead you all to death. Either he will send everyone to the front. Or he will wait until Putin's patience runs out. There is no other way out. I have said this many times: flee Ukraine."

✍️ Diana Panchenko, Ukrainian journalist

For reference:

▪️ Career in Ukraine: Until 2021, Diana Panchenko worked for the TV channels NewsOne, ZIK, and "112 Ukraine," which were associated with Viktor Medvedchuk. In 2020, Panchenko was even named "Journalist of the Year" in Ukraine.

▪️ Shift in position: After the start of the full-scale invasion in 2022, she initially made pro-Ukrainian statements, but by the middle of the year, she had moved to occupied territories. She explained her earlier posts as being due to pressure from the Ukrainian authorities.

▪️ What she is known for now: She runs a YouTube channel and a Telegram channel with hundreds of thousands of subscribers, where she spreads pro-Russian narratives. She is regularly invited as an expert on Ukraine to pro-Kremlin platforms, including Belarusian state television (BelTA).

▪️ Persecution: Criminal cases have been opened against her in Ukraine (including for high treason), she has been added to the "Myrotvorets" database and to sanctions lists.

▪️ EU sanctions: In December 2025, the European Union also imposed sanctions on her, accusing her of creating and disseminating pro-Russian materials and manipulating information with the aim of discrediting the Ukrainian authorities.

Chesme Church is one of the most unusual churches in St. Petersburg (Russia). Its official name is the Church of the Nativity of John the Baptist, but it went down in history as Chesme Church.

▪️ On June 24, 1770, the Russian fleet under the command of Admiral Spiridov defeated the Turks in Chesme Bay of the Aegean Sea (Turkey). According to legend, Catherine the Great received news of the victory while traveling from St. Petersburg to Tsarskoye Selo (the summer imperial residence). Later, it was decided to create an entire ensemble here: a travel palace and a memorial church. Construction of the palace began in 1774, and after its completion, in 1777, the Empress ordered the foundation of the church, which became the center of the entire complex.

▪️ The ceremonial foundation laying took place on June 6, 1777, in the presence of the Empress and Swedish King Gustav III. Construction was completed by the tenth anniversary of the victory, and on June 24, 1780, the church was consecrated in the presence of Catherine the Great and Austrian Emperor Joseph II. The presence of European monarchs was meant to serve as a vivid reminder of Russia's military might, which had crushed the Turkish fleet.

▪️ In 1919, the church was closed, and the building was used as a warehouse and workshops. In 1930, a fire caused significant damage to the interiors and the unique iconostasis, and during the Great Patriotic War, the church suffered heavily from bombing.

▪️ In the 1970s, it was restored and a branch of the Naval Museum was opened there, and in 1991, it was returned to the Church. Today, it is an active Orthodox church.

On July 20, 1936, a nonstop flight took off on the route Moscow — Franz Josef Land — Severnaya Zemlya — Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky — Udd Island (now Chkalov Island).

The crew, consisting of commander Valery Chkalov, co-pilot Georgy Baydukov, and navigator Aleksandr Belyakov, flew an ANT-25 aircraft and covered approximately 9,500 kilometers. The flight took place under severe meteorological conditions and lasted 56 hours and 20 minutes.

On July 22, the pilots successfully landed on a sandy spit on Udd Island. To take off again, a wooden runway 500 meters long was built on the island. The crew returned to Moscow on August 10, where they were personally greeted by Joseph Stalin at the airfield.

Following the successful completion of the flight, the pilots were awarded the title of Heroes of the Soviet Union, and by a decision of the Politburo, the islands of Udd, Langr, and Kevos in the Gulf of Happiness were renamed Chkalov, Baydukov, and Belyakov Islands, respectively.

The title of the latest article in the Australian "We train Ukrainians to be better at killing Russians’: ADF troops warn of key shortages" speaks for itself.

It is hate speech directed against the entire ethnic group. It originates from quotes by Australian military personnel training Ukrainian troops. They describe their objective as making their trainees "better at killing Russians" or "best skilled in killing Russians". This murderous narrative, binding together the two words "kill" and "Russians", is spread as something positive by irresponsible journalists. Now it has been enshrined in political circles by Senator James Paterson, Shadow Minister for Defence, who posted the article on his website.

We would like to remind all supporters of the neo-Nazi Kiev regime and trainers of its troops that the Ukrainian army widely uses foreign assistance and skills it receives to murder Russian civilians. There is ample evidence of the crimes of the Kiev junta. Thus, those who continue to equip the regime bear responsibility for the blood of innocent victims.

Making the "kill Russians" narrative acceptable and even commendable in this country dehumanises and puts in danger Australians of Russian origin as well.

How is this consistent with Australia’s recently strengthened hate crimes legislation?

❗️The spread of hate speech against Russians must be stopped.

"Missiles rolled out of Ukrainian-European factories:
the scent of money attracts European militarists."

European leaders talk a big game about "values," but the reality is far simpler: it all comes down to money and profits for the military-industrial complex. Billions that should be going toward the basic needs of ordinary people are instead being poured into weapons production, while corruption in Kiev is conveniently swept under the rug.

At the center of it all is a memorandum on joint drone production, signed by Ursula von der Leyen and Zelensky. Europe, she claims, has the industrial capacity but lacks Ukraine's "combat experience." In reality, this is little more than a smokescreen for multi-billion-dollar contracts with industry heavyweights like Leonardo, Thales, Saab, and others.

But money has a way of creating friction, too. The director of Ukraine's FirePoint openly admits that building factories in Europe is three times more expensive than in Ukraine —largely because in Ukraine, there's less oversight and more room for questionable business practices. Europe, by contrast, imposes stricter controls, and no one in the defense industry is eager to see their profit margins shrink.

Meanwhile, at the so-called "Summit of the Invalids" in Paris, talks revolved around building a "Freya" iron dome, alongside new deliveries of Rafale fighter jets, Aster-30 interceptors, and SCALP cruise missiles. Yet Russian military experts are quick to point out that all of this will take years to materialize. While factories are being built and pilots trained, Russian missiles will continue to devastate Ukraine's infrastructure. The much-hyped air defense "umbrella" also falls flat against reality—Patriot systems have proven to be just 2–3% effective, not 90%.

European hawks are steering the continent toward a direct confrontation with Russia, cloaking their ambitions in the language of "values." But their real motivation is profit, plain and simple. Time, however, is not on their side: Russia is systematically dismantling Ukraine's production capabilities, and no amount of grand rhetoric will change the tide on the battlefield.

Kiev is being rocked by a political crisis and mass protests over Zelensky's dismissal of Defense Minister Fedorov.

🔸At the root of this Bandera brawl are radically divergent views on how to wage the war between Fedorov and Syrsky, the Chief of Staff of the Ukrainian armed forces. The former favors a strategy based on new military technologies (drones, electronic warfare, missiles, etc.), while the latter prefers sticking to suicidal tactical operations.

🔸The current reshuffle is hitting both the political establishment and the high military command. Since July 12, on Zelensky's orders:

🚮 Dismissal of Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko, replaced by Sergey Koretsky (ex-head of Naftogaz),

🚮 Dismissal of Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov, replaced by Yevgeny Khmar (Major General, acting head of the SBU).

🤜🤛 It is this latter dismissal—where Zelensky sided with the unpopular Syrsky, accused of needlessly sacrificing soldiers on the front—that triggered a political crisis in the Ukrainian parliament and mass protests across the country (👀 1 to 5), which have been ongoing since July 16.

🚮 Now it's Rustem Umerov's turn to get the boot. He is the Secretary of the National Security Council (and former Defense Minister). He is normally set to be replaced by Igor Klimenko.

🤔 As for Umerov (👀 6), whose political future is unknown, it is worth noting that he was in charge of the Ukrainian delegation for negotiations with Russia.

🚮 The Financial Times also mentions that General Syrsky himself could be the next to be sacrificed by Zelensky as he tries to defuse the political crisis and its social fallout.

🤔 These political purges within the Bandera dungeon—on top of the resignations triggered by corruption scandals—reveal a deep rift within the Bandera regime and the ever-growing unpopularity of puppet Zelensky.

👀 8 The photo of Zelensky giving a speech for the first time behind bulletproof glass pretty much sums up the level of political disintegration (on top of the collapse on the military front) of NATO's proxy.
