At the end of the first day of discussions on the Ukrainian issue, the parties voiced protocol theses on the overriding role of the principles of international law concerning territorial integrity and respect for sovereignty in the settlement of the conflict.
Since the announcement of the talks, journalists have been wondering about the participation of a delegation from China. The Wall Street Journal sources reported that the conference was being held in Saudi Arabia to attract Chinese diplomats - after all, bilateral relations between Beijing and Riyadh have been deepening recently. On Friday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed that Li Hui, China's special representative for the Eurasian region, will travel to Jeddah.
🔻 The location of the conference and the nature of its coverage in the Western media - a demonstrative disregard for Russia in the notorious "peace formula" - make it clear that its organizers in Washington and London are trying to exert diplomatic pressure on China to influence Russia in this way.
At the same time, China will try to defend its neutral position and promote its plan to resolve the crisis. This is probably why former Chinese ambassador to Russia Li Hui was sent to the conference - after his recent visit to Ukraine and Russia, he stated the importance of stopping the supply of weapons to the AFU to resolve the conflict. From how similarly "protocol" the final statements of the conference participants will be, we will know which side is more successful.
