May vs Can

βœ…Can
The word can is used to denote ability.

πŸ‘‰I can whistle.
(I have the ability to whistle.)
πŸ‘‰Can he lift 150 kgs?
(Does he have the ability to lift 150 kgs?)

βœ…May
The word may is used to denote permission.

πŸ‘‰You may swim in this river.
(You are allowed to swim in this river.)
πŸ‘‰May I have a biscuit?
(Am I permitted to have a biscuit?)

βœ…Can for Permission (Informal Setting)

These days, the word can is used for both ability and permission, particularly in an informal setting.

πŸ‘‰You can swim in this river.
(You are allowed to swim in this river.)
πŸ‘‰Can I have a biscuit?
(Am I permitted to have a biscuit?)

βœ…Use May for Permission in a Formal Setting

If you have a reason to be "uber correct" (e.g., you're hosting royalty or a very pedantic grandparent), you should use may to denote permission.

πŸ‘‰May I leave the table?
(Am I permitted to leave the table?)
How to use wish

βœ…' I wish to' can mean the same as 'I want to' but it is much, much more formal and much, much less common.

πŸ‘‰I wish to make a complaint.

βœ…You can also use 'wish' with a noun to 'offer good wishes'.

πŸ‘‰I wish you all the best in your new job.
πŸ‘‰We wish you a merry Christmas.

βœ…Notice that when you want to offer good wishes using a verb, you must use 'hope ' and not 'wish'.

πŸ‘‰We wish you the best of luck.
πŸ‘‰We hope you have the best of luck.

βœ…However, the main use of 'wish' is to say that we would like things to be different from what they are, that we have regrets about the present situation.

πŸ‘‰I wish I was rich.
πŸ‘‰He wishes he lived in Paris.

βœ…Notice that the verb tense which follows 'I wish' is 'more in the past' than the tense corresponding to its meaning.

πŸ‘‰I'm too fat. I wish I was thin.
πŸ‘‰I never get invited to parties. I wish I got invited to parties.
πŸ‘‰It's raining. I wish it wasn't raining.

βœ…In the case of 'will' , where 'will' means 'show willingness' we use 'would'.

πŸ‘‰He won't help me. I wish he would help me.
πŸ‘‰You're making too much noise. I wish you would be quiet.
πŸ‘‰You keep interrupting me. I wish you wouldn't do that.

βœ…Where 'will' means a future event, we cannot use 'wish' and must use 'hope'.

πŸ‘‰There's a strike tomorrow. I hope some buses will still be running.
πŸ‘‰I hope everything will be fine in your new job.

βœ…In more formal English, we use the subjunctive form 'were' and not 'was' after 'wish'.

πŸ‘‰I wish I were taller.
πŸ‘‰ I wish it were Saturday today.
πŸ‘‰ I wish he were here.
