๐Ÿ’ฎ Listen / Hear

โ‡๏ธ Hear
is often used for the action that you do accidentally:
๐Ÿ”นDid you hear that? It sounded like a gunshot!

โ‡๏ธ Listen is often used for the action that you do intentionally:
๐Ÿ”นI listened to the new CD.

โ‡๏ธ There are some exceptions โ€“ some cases when โ€œhearโ€ is used for intentional listening:
๐Ÿ”นI heard (= listened to) an interesting show on the radio last night.

โ‡๏ธ The word โ€œhearโ€ can also refer to communication โ€“ when you learn something because somebody told you:
๐Ÿ”นI heard (= somebody told me) your daughter got into a car accident. Is she all right?
๐Ÿ”นHave you heard about the new Batman movie coming out soon?

โ‡๏ธ Finally, the expression โ€œhear fromโ€ a person or company means to receive any type of communication from them (could be a phone call, an e-mail, or a letter).

๐Ÿ”นI sent my application for the job, but I havenโ€™t heard from the company yet. (= they havenโ€™t contacted me yet)
๐Ÿ”นI was thrilled to get your e-mail โ€“ it was so nice to hear from you after all these years!

i.e. vs. e.g.

Lots of people use the terms interchangeably when trying to elaborate on a point, but they really mean two different things: "i.e." roughly means "that is" or "in other words," while "e.g." means "example given" or "for example."

The former is used to clarify something you've said, while the latter adds color to a story through an example.

โœ… Fast, quick or quickly?

๐Ÿ”ถFast and quick mean moving with great speed.
Fast is both an adjective and an adverb. Quick is an
adjective and the adverb form is quickly.

๐Ÿ”ดCompare

๐Ÿ”ธIt was a fast train.(adjective)
๐Ÿ”นYou walk very fast! (adverb)

๐Ÿ”ธWe need to have a quick chat before the meeting.(adjective)
๐Ÿ”นWe should do it as quickly as possible. (adverb)

โ‰๏ธ Not: โ€ฆ very fastly.

๐Ÿ”ถWe usually use quick to refer to something happening in a short time, or a shorter than expected time:

โœ… We stopped for a quick snack.

โŒ We stopped for a fast snack.

โœ… I just need a quick answer.

โŒ I just need a fast answer.

๐Ÿ”ถ Fast refers to things that happen or go at high speed, e.g. a train, a person running:

โœ… She loves fast cars.
โŒ She loves quick cars.

Note the common expression fast food to refer to food such as hamburgers, which are cooked and served in a very short time in restaurants:

You shouldnโ€™t eat so much fast food. Itโ€™s not good for you.
