๐Ÿ“š Mastering prepositions can boost your confidence in speaking and writing! These small words pack big meaning, guiding time, place, and relationships in sentences. Letโ€™s simplify them with practical examples!

โœ๏ธ 1. Prepositions of Time: Use at for specific times, on for days/dates, and in for longer periods. Iโ€™ll call you at 5 PM_ tomorrow._ Weโ€™re meeting on Friday. She moved here in 2023.
โœ… 2. Prepositions of Place: In for enclosed spaces, on for surfaces, and under for beneath. The keys are in the drawer. The painting hangs on the wall. The dog is hiding under the couch.
๐ŸŽฏ 3. Prepositions with Verbs: Verbs often pair with specific prepositions. Sheโ€™s interested in sailing. Heโ€™s afraid of spiders. Theyโ€™re good at math.

๐Ÿ’ก Memory Hack: Create visual stories! Imagine a clock (โฐ) for at, a calendar (๐Ÿ“…) for on, and a yearbook ๐Ÿ“š for in. For place, picture a box (๐Ÿ“ฆ) for in, a table (ะฐะฑะปะธ) for on, and a tunnel (๐Ÿ•ณ๏ธ) for under. Linking prepositions to vivid images makes them stick!

๐ŸŒŸ Keep practicingโ€”prepositions are the glue of English sentences!

๐Ÿ—ฏ NOTE: ๐Ÿ—ฏ

โ˜๏ธ โ€œaccording toโ€ cannot be used to talk about one's own opinion/view because it has a third person referent. We use it to talk about the evidence from someone or somewhere else or to report someone else's idea or thought, not our own.

We can say โ€œaccording to him/her/you/them,โ€ but we cannot say โ€œaccording to me/us.โ€

For example:
๐Ÿ”ธ According to me, Maria should avoid traveling because she's pregnant. โœ–๏ธ
๐Ÿ”ธ In my opinion, Maria should avoid traveling because she's pregnant. โœ”๏ธ

English Grammar - Modal Verbs

SHALL

๐Ÿ“š Shall is not used very much nowadays and mostly in formal speech and some legal documents. Originally Shall was used instead of Will in first person (with I and We) when talking about the future. Now almost everyone uses Will with all subjects.

๐Ÿ“š Nowadays, the most common use of shall in everyday English (although not in American English) is in questions that serve as offers or suggestions: "Shall I ...?" or "Shall we ...?"

Situations where Shall is still occasionally used:

1. Suggestion

โ–ช๏ธ Shall I get a pizza for dinner tonight?
โ–ช๏ธ Shall we take a taxi home?

2. Offers / Volunteering to do something

โ–ช๏ธ That bag looks heavy. Shall I carry it for you?
โ–ช๏ธ Shall I wait for you?

3. Instructions (asking for or giving)

โ–ช๏ธ What shall I do with your mail when it arrives?
โ–ช๏ธ I shall meet you there at 7.

4. Promises

โ–ช๏ธ You shall be the first person to know. (= I promise that you will be the first person)
โ–ช๏ธ I shall get you a new bike for your birthday.

5. Confirmation (Statement of Fact)

โ–ช๏ธ I shall turn 30 next week.
โ–ช๏ธ We shall know the results of the exam next week.

6. Formal written regulations and rules

โ–ช๏ธ A record shall be kept of all students arriving late to class (= school regulations)
โ–ช๏ธ Members of the board of directors shall be elected annually (= company regulations)

The Negative of Shall
๐Ÿ“š The negative of shall is shall not (= will not). The contraction of shall not is shan't (= won't). It is very rare to hear this used nowadays though you may find it written in older texts.

โ–ช๏ธ
I shan't let the children bother you.

Shall in Question Tags
๐Ÿ“š Shall is used in questions tags when the main verb is Let's.

โ–ช๏ธ
Let's go to the beach, shall we?

โ‡๏ธ Become
and get can be used to describe
changes of emotional or physical state, or
situation.

โ‡๏ธ We use get with adjectives such as old,
cold or dark to describe natural changes.

โ‡๏ธ Go

that are not desirable
