English Grammar - Modal Verbs

SHALL

๐Ÿ“š Shall is not used very much nowadays and mostly in formal speech and some legal documents. Originally Shall was used instead of Will in first person (with I and We) when talking about the future. Now almost everyone uses Will with all subjects.

๐Ÿ“š Nowadays, the most common use of shall in everyday English (although not in American English) is in questions that serve as offers or suggestions: "Shall I ...?" or "Shall we ...?"

Situations where Shall is still occasionally used:

1. Suggestion

โ–ช๏ธ Shall I get a pizza for dinner tonight?
โ–ช๏ธ Shall we take a taxi home?

2. Offers / Volunteering to do something

โ–ช๏ธ That bag looks heavy. Shall I carry it for you?
โ–ช๏ธ Shall I wait for you?

3. Instructions (asking for or giving)

โ–ช๏ธ What shall I do with your mail when it arrives?
โ–ช๏ธ I shall meet you there at 7.

4. Promises

โ–ช๏ธ You shall be the first person to know. (= I promise that you will be the first person)
โ–ช๏ธ I shall get you a new bike for your birthday.

5. Confirmation (Statement of Fact)

โ–ช๏ธ I shall turn 30 next week.
โ–ช๏ธ We shall know the results of the exam next week.

6. Formal written regulations and rules

โ–ช๏ธ A record shall be kept of all students arriving late to class (= school regulations)
โ–ช๏ธ Members of the board of directors shall be elected annually (= company regulations)

The Negative of Shall
๐Ÿ“š The negative of shall is shall not (= will not). The contraction of shall not is shan't (= won't). It is very rare to hear this used nowadays though you may find it written in older texts.

โ–ช๏ธ
I shan't let the children bother you.

Shall in Question Tags
๐Ÿ“š Shall is used in questions tags when the main verb is Let's.

โ–ช๏ธ
Let's go to the beach, shall we?

โ‡๏ธ Become
and get can be used to describe
changes of emotional or physical state, or
situation.

โ‡๏ธ We use get with adjectives such as old,

โ‡๏ธ Go

that are not desirable

๐Ÿ‘‰ Is there a difference between Which and That?

โ˜๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ฏ We use โ€œthatโ€ when we refer to people, animals, and things. We use โ€œwhichโ€ when we refer to animals and things.
If the clause is restrictive, you need to use the relative pronoun that, without it, the meaning would be unclear.

For example

โœ๏ธ The car that he bought is very expensive.

Here we are being specific about the price of the car he bought. Without it, the sentence would lose its original meaning and purpose.

โ˜๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ฏ Use pronoun which when a clause is non-restrictive. Meaning that you are not being specific but instead you are adding extra information to a sentence. A comma usually accompanies this as it denotes a pause in speech and it always precedes which.

For example

โœ๏ธ He bought a car, which is very expensive.

Here we are referring to him buying a car, not how expensive the car was. If we remove the clause, โ€œwhich is very expensive,โ€ it would have no effect on the sentence and still make sense. It serves to add further information only.
