Addition and contrast

โ€ผ๏ธ In addition, furthermore,etc ( and) โ€ผ๏ธ

โ€ผ๏ธ Although, in spite of, etc ( but ) โ€ผ๏ธ

๐Ÿ‘‰ Is there a difference between Which and That?

โ˜๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ฏ We use โ€œthatโ€ when we refer to people, animals, and things. We use โ€œwhichโ€ when we refer to animals and things.
If the clause is restrictive, you need to use the relative pronoun that, without it, the meaning would be unclear.

For example

โœ๏ธ The car that he bought is very expensive.

Here we are being specific about the price of the car he bought. Without it, the sentence would lose its original meaning and purpose.

โ˜๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ฏ Use pronoun which when a clause is non-restrictive. Meaning that you are not being specific but instead you are adding extra information to a sentence. A comma usually accompanies this as it denotes a pause in speech and it always precedes which.

For example

โœ๏ธ He bought a car, which is very expensive.

Here we are referring to him buying a car, not how expensive the car was. If we remove the clause, โ€œwhich is very expensive,โ€ it would have no effect on the sentence and still make sense. It serves to add further information only.

๐Ÿก *Home Vocabulary* ๐Ÿก

โ™ฆ๏ธAttic โ€” A room at the highest part of a house, below the roof (see below).

โ™ฆ๏ธBathroom โ€” Any room with a toilet and sink.
Itโ€™s weird, but not all bathrooms have a place where you can take a bath! A bathroom might also be called a restroom or washroom.

โ™ฆ๏ธBasement โ€” A level below the ground level of a house.
The basement is the whole underground space. It might be one big room or a group of smaller rooms.

โ™ฆ๏ธBedroom โ€” Where the bed is, of course!
In a lot of houses, bedrooms are upstairs (on a level above the ground floor).

โ™ฆ๏ธDen โ€” A room with comfortable furniture for relaxing.
A den is like a living room (see below), but less fancy and more private.

โ™ฆ๏ธDining room โ€” The room where meals are eaten.

โ™ฆ๏ธDriveway โ€” The short โ€œroadโ€ next to a house where you can park a car or drive it into the garage.

โ™ฆ๏ธGarage โ€” The building where you keep a car.
You can use the word garage whether or not this building connects to the house.

โ™ฆ๏ธHall โ€” A hall or hallway is the narrow (small, thin) space that connects rooms.
โ™ฆ๏ธKitchen โ€” The room where you store and prepare food.
โ™ฆ๏ธLiving room โ€” A living room is a room for relaxing or entertaining guests.
In English-speaking countries, this room is often located toward the front of the house. In the U.K., itโ€™s sometimes called the sitting room.

โ™ฆ๏ธPorch โ€” A covered
outdoor space.
A porch can be at the front, back or side of a house.
Sometimes porches will be less like open spaces and more like rooms with lots of screened windows (that let air in but keep bugs out!).

โ™ฆ๏ธRoof โ€” The covering on the top of a house.
Roofs come in different shapes and styles, but the most common kind in the U.S. and the U.K. (and a lot of other places) is a gable roof. A gable roof has two flat surfaces that tilt up and come together, making a triangle. The space under the roof in this triangle area is usually where the attic is.
Stairs/stairway โ€” The set of steps that connect different levels of a house.

โ™ฆ๏ธYard โ€” The outdoor area at the front, back or side of a house.
In the U.K., people call a yard a garden. In the U.S., a garden is a part of a yard for growing plants, like flowers or vegetables.

Don't you think?

๐Ÿ”ทUse this question to ask for agreement from a listener. People use this expression when:

โœ๏ธthey're making a suggestion:
๐Ÿ”นYou should ask the professor for help, don't you think?

โœ๏ธthey want to state their opinion, but they don't feel confident enough to just directly say it they want the listeners to feel included in the statement
๐Ÿ”นWow. I love this place. It's great, don't you think?

โœ๏ธthey want the listener to admit that something is true:
๐Ÿ”นYou're too old for that, don't you think?

๐Ÿ”น Common English Mistake ๐Ÿ”น

As an experienced teacher, Iโ€™ve seen this error countless timesโ€”even advanced learners get it wrong!

โŒ Incorrect: "I need some advices."
โœ… Correct: "I need some advice."

๐Ÿ“Œ Rule: "Advice" is an uncountable noun, so it doesnโ€™t take "s." If you need to count it, say:
โœ”๏ธ "A piece of advice"
โœ”๏ธ "Some advice"
