What if your AI coding agent could do more than just generate code?
Instead of copying code back and forth between an LLM and your development environment, agentic development brings the AI agent directly into the workflow — where it can interact with #InterSystemsIRIS, use tools, execute code, detect errors, and iterate on its own.
In this new video, Ariel Glickman demonstrates how to get started with agentic development for InterSystems IRIS, including:
👉 Connecting Claude Code and GitHub Copilot to IRIS
👉 Working with the IRIS Agentic Dev MCP server
👉 Using tools and Skills to perform more complex development tasks
👉 Maintaining persistent project context
👉 Building applications with natural-language instructions
👉 Exploring multi-agent workflows and what comes next with AI Hub
The goal isn’t to replace developers — it’s to spend less time on repetitive tasks and debugging, and more time on the work that actually needs your expertise.
Watch the video, try the tools yourself, and see how agentic development can change the way you build with InterSystems IRIS:

🎯 Before MCP, every AI tool needed a separate custom integration for every database, API, or external service. MCP solves this with one standardized protocol.
The Model Context Protocol is an open standard introduced by Anthropic in November 2024 that allows AI assistants to connect to external tools and data sources through a common interface. For InterSystems IRIS developers, this means giving tools like Cursor, Claude Desktop, Claude Code, and GitHub Copilot controlled access to SQL, globals, class methods, source code, and interoperability productions.
Three MCP primitives
👉 Tools — functions the AI agent can call: write to a database, call APIs, modify files
👉 Resources — read-only data sources: file contents, database schemas, API documentation
👉 Prompts — pre-built instruction templates that structure how the AI uses specific tools and resources
Two recommended IRIS integration approaches
👉 InterSystems Python Native SDK — best for data operations, globals, SQL, and calling existing ObjectScript class methods without rewriting them as separate AI services
👉 Atelier REST API (/api/atelier/) — source code access, text search across the codebase, compilation, development workflows
iris-mcp-blueprint demonstrates all three MCP primitives against a live IRIS instance using both approaches: SQL queries, global access, class method calls, source code retrieval via Atelier, and interoperability production inspection.
Community projects already available: mcp-server-iris, intersystems-objectscript-mcp, iris-mcp-atelier, servAI, IRIS MCP Server Suite, and InterSystems IRIS AI Hub.
MCP does not replace existing IRIS APIs or business logic — it provides a standardized interface on top of them. 👇
