Be your own tour guide in St. Petersburg 😎

Who needs a guide when you can explore the depth of history yourself? Our recent story features four resources to help you explore the city:

🧱 CityWalls

The site’s community is constantly collecting data about every single building and monument in the city: historical photos and illustrations, plans, general info, and interesting fats. Streets, architects, styles, and historical periods – choose any category to organize your search.

Don’t be discouraged by its “non-modern” look – this is a gem and a primary source for exploring the city through architecture.

🏚 How old is this house

Peel off the architectural layers with this map that shows the age of buildings in St. Pete. Thanks to the color markings, you can discern between the historic areas and modern blocks. By clicking on a building, you’ll even see the name of its architect and the style.

Want to add a bit of fun? We dare you to find your house on the map without any hint in just one take!

🗺 Wikimapia

This geographic online encyclopedia marks objects around the whole world. There’s unique info about streets, districts, local folklore, and what’s especially interesting, natural objects. So, this is where you can also read more about a lake or a hill you’re planning your hiking route to.

📸 PastVu

Get to know the city by looking at its old pictures! The website is map-based, allowing you to navigate through different areas and discover historical images of St. Petersburg, and even features info about the angle from which each photo was taken.

Before joining the program, he took a year to learn Russian language at ITMO:

… my program is taught in Russian, but thanks to the training I received in the first year as part of the Foundation Program, I am able to grasp my lectures well. These classes were so interesting; I got to learn a new language with so many students from different parts of the world.
