The Binance exchange was breached overnight

It is understood that the hackers likely gained access to the transaction-signing system via a DevOps engineer’s laptop. This allowed them to infiltrate an internal service container and initiate fund withdrawals without needing to steal any private keys.

To target one of the exchange’s Ethereum hot wallets, the attackers leveraged the EIP-7702 mechanism—part of the Pectra upgrade—by preparing 50 pre-signed authorizations with sequential numbers. One of these was successfully used to transfer control of the wallet to a malicious smart contract.

Analysts at TRM Labs believe the attackers managed to gain access to Binance’s signing system across multiple networks; however, the exact method used to compromise the infrastructure remains under investigation.
