Analysts at Chainalysis estimate that criminals have forcibly extorted over $30 million from cryptocurrency owners since the beginning of the year. In total, $107 million was attempted, but some funds never reached the attackers or were frozen.
46 attacks were documented, compared to 40 for the same period in 2025. However, the percentage of successful attacks dropped sharply: 26% in 2026, compared to 49% the year before, and 67% in 2024.
France, unsurprisingly, led the way with 30 publicly known cases, while local authorities have documented over 70. The monthly frequency of attacks increased from 1.9 to 4.6. Analysts believe the leak occurred in 2024: a tax official, according to investigators, sold a dossier on cryptocurrency owners, including addresses, amounts, and phone numbers.
