🔥 How a Fire Sprinkler Actually Works (Step-by-Step)

A lot of people think all sprinkler heads activate at once during a fire — that’s actually a myth.

Here’s what really happens:

1️⃣ Fire starts → hot air rises
2️⃣ Heat collects near the ceiling
3️⃣ The glass bulb inside the sprinkler heats up (~57–74°C for standard rating)
4️⃣ The liquid inside expands and breaks the bulb
5️⃣ Water is released and hits the deflector
6️⃣ Water spreads evenly over the fire source

Only the sprinkler exposed to sufficient heat activates — not the entire building.

In most cases, a single sprinkler head can control or suppress a fire before it spreads.

From an engineering perspective, it’s a simple but brilliant passive safety system.

Would love to hear from fire protection engineers here — wet pipe vs dry pipe preference in commercial buildings?
