⠀
🧐writeandimprove.com
⠀

Cooking a writing class
⠀
When prepping a writing lesson I try to focus on the needs of my students and they are not confined to a wider range of vocabulary or good grammar to express themselves. It is true that they want to go beyond all that, but still it is only a part of the equation. In fact, what low-elementary or advanced students have in common is the lack of cognitive writing skills. However bitter it may sound, we are not trained at schools to write texts that will cater to our readers' expectations. And if we speak of international exams, our reader is unequivocally against any off-topic musings.
⠀
It was that issue that sent me on the journey of finding the tools for my students' better writing. And finally I figured everything out. Physcolinguistics answered all my questions and explained it in plan words. Any good writer has to go through 7 stages to produce a well-read text:
⠀
1️⃣Macro planning stage:
⠀
The writer focuses on the ideas, purpose, the reader and the genre of the text, taking into consideration the register, style and the tone of the future masterpiece.
⠀
2️⃣Organisation stage:
⠀
The writer organizes the ideas in relation to the purpose of the text. The ideas are evaluated and put on a paper in the form of rough notes (first rough plan).
⠀
3️⃣Micro-planning stage:
⠀
At this point the writer thinks over each part of the text and tries to priorities the ideas and track the coherence of the concepts and the overall progression of the text.
⠀
4️⃣Translation stage:
⠀
Now the write needs to convert the concepts, ideas and the previously created notes into phrases and sentences, or verbalize something that existed as a concept before. It is still in your head, but not on the paper.
⠀
5️⃣Execution stage:
⠀
That's where the physical writing takes place. Writing at this stage looks like writing a stream of consciousness framed by the plan.
⠀
6️⃣Monitoring stage
⠀
At first sight it involves checking the accuracy
⠀
of spelling, punctuation and syntax. At a higher level, it entails examining the current sentence to see how clearly it reflects the writer’s intentions and whether it fits structure of the text.
⠀
7️⃣Editing and revision stage
⠀
That's when final corrections come into place. The writer returns to the weakest parts of the text and edits them. At this stage they also make sure that the right tone is set for the target reader.
⠀
✒The best way to teach these skills is to address them step by step. You will surely need more than one or two classes to convey the idea of going through these stages and making use of them.
⠀
Anyway, I am sure the more you focus on the planning stage, the easier thr writing goes. And those who are learning to write should know it. #writing
