Mornings are the best time to build new habits.

When you wake up, you’re refreshed, your mind is clear, and your willpower is at its peak.

Building a habit isn’t easy—it requires breaking old routines, consciously working towards your goals, and sticking to actions that won’t give you instant gratification. For all of this, you need willpower. And the most willpower you’ll have in a day is right when you wake up.

So, eliminate all distractions. Make the first thing you do in the morning the habit you want to build. No excuses.

You don’t want to do it, but you know you need to.

Ever felt that way?

You keep putting off that task, procrastinating endlessly. The frustration builds, and your self-confidence starts to fade bit by bit. It’s a vicious cycle of self-doubt.

So, how do you break free from this pattern?

By “eating that frog.” The "frog" is the task you dread the most but need to complete. The strategy? Tackle it first thing in the morning, right after you wake up. No delays, no excuses.

If the 'frog' feels more like an elephant, break it down into smaller tasks. In software engineering, this is known as 'decomposition'—dividing a big task into smaller, actionable steps. Each step should be clear, with defined actions and expected outcomes.

If a task still feels too big, keep breaking it down. The goal is to build a sustainable habit, not to overwhelm yourself by stretching your willpower too thin.

For example, if you're just starting to learn data structures and solve LeetCode problems, don’t aim to learn everything at once. Start small: tackle the easiest problem first and build a daily problem-solving habit from there. Learning is a journey, and you can’t absorb everything overnight.

Just decompose it.

Focus on Building a Habit

When you’re working on building a new habit, it’s important to be kind to yourself. Start small and manageable. Break it down into the easiest, most approachable task — you can spend 30 minutes, 20 minutes, or even just 10 minutes.

When forming a habit, don’t overwhelm yourself. Aim to accomplish one simple task, even if it’s just mastering a single concept or understanding one term.

The key here is consistency. Make it a point to do something every day that moves you closer to your goal. The task should feel as effortless as possible, so there’s less resistance to getting started.

Just do it.

The Importance of Setting a Goal

When I first started solving LeetCode problems, I didn’t have a clear goal. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to achieve, so I struggled with consistency. One day, while scrolling through LinkedIn, I came across a developer’s post showing a screenshot of their LeetCode profile with a perfect streak of green squares.

That meant they had been solving problems consistently every day for an entire year. It was a turning point for me — I realized I wanted that same level of consistency. For the first time, I had a clear vision of my goal and how I could achieve it.

I began tackling LeetCode problems again, this time with a specific goal in mind and a defined number of days to stay consistent. Having that vision helped me build the discipline I needed.

Sometimes, all it takes is a clear goal to turn your aspirations into reality.
Just imagine it.

Triggers

Ask yourself, “What’s stopping me from taking action every day?” More often than not, the cause is distractions. One of the biggest distractions we face today is our smartphones. If you want to consistently solve LeetCode problems, avoid touching your phone before or during your sessions. Eliminate that distraction.

Another helpful strategy is to find a friend to work with. Build the habit together, compare your progress, and discuss areas for improvement. Celebrate your small wins along the way and remember how that success feels.

I Couldn't Solve the Easiest LeetCode Problem in 6 Hours

…when I first started solving algorithmic problems. I remember struggling to understand the concepts, spot patterns, and use the right data structures. It was overwhelming.

In the beginning, LeetCode felt like a constant source of stress. I would sit in front of my monitor for hours, stuck, not knowing where to start. I kept asking myself: "How are so many others getting it, and I can't figure this out?! It’s supposed to be easy!" Every day felt like a battle, and I considered quitting more times than I can count.

But the desire to see my profile filled with green squares and the goal of being able to solve medium-level problems in 10-15 minutes kept me going. The journey wasn't easy, but persistence was key.

I pushed through.

I Struggled with Data Structures Early On

When I first started solving LeetCode problems, I had no clue which data structure to use.

I couldn’t write one from scratch, nor did I understand how they worked under the hood.

This lack of understanding meant I didn’t know the time or space complexities of different operations.

I couldn’t spot patterns or solve problems efficiently.

But here's what helped: I focused on learning a little about data structures every day.

That steady accumulation of knowledge made all the difference.

Now, I know how to choose the right data structure for the task at hand.

So, if you're feeling stuck, don’t worry—you can do it too.

Start small, be consistent, and the results will come
