UniProt is a comprehensive, expert-led, publicly available database of protein sequence, function and variation information. This video will give an overview of programmatic access to the UniProt database using Python and cover key aspects of protein entry searches, data filtering, batch downloads and give examples of further processing of downloaded target data. Following a brief introduction to UniProt services, where to find relevant documentation and help features, the webinar will focus on worked examples. These will include how to programmatically search and retrieve protein entries and sequences, within the results. Adding with this, will then show how to align orthologous sequences and filter for features of interest, such as disease variant information. Also covers programmatic examples of the UniProt Retrieve/ID mapping service, batch downloads, processing, and filtering data by annotation type.

The Power of Pandas: Python

Pandas is a Python package providing fast, flexible, and expressive data structures designed to make working with “relational” or “labeled” data both easy and intuitive. It aims to be the fundamental high-level building block for doing practical, real world data analysis in Python. Additionally, it has the broader goal of becoming the most powerful and flexible open source data analysis / manipulation tool available in any language. It is already well on its way toward this goal.

Pandas is a high-level data manipulation tool developed by Wes McKinney. It is built on the Numpy package and its key data structure is called the DataFrame. DataFrames allow you to store and manipulate tabular data in rows of observations and columns of variables.

- This is a free class for people with a little bit of programming experience who want to learn Python.

- The class includes written materials, lecture videos, and lots of code exercises to practice Python coding.

- These materials are used within Google to introduce Python to people who have just a little programming experience.

- The first exercises work on basic Python concepts like strings and lists, building up to the later exercises which are full programs dealing with text files, processes, and http connections.
