​The 2016 revision fundamentally altered calculations by shifting focus to cracked section properties (using 35% moment of inertia for beams and 70% for columns) and redefining story drift checks.

​The Idea:

Regular concrete is great under compression but terrible under tension. By introducing high-strength steel tendons that are pulled tight before (or after) casting, we put the concrete under a permanent state of compression. This pre-compression counteracts the tensile stresses caused by external loads.

The Idea:
When dry sand comes into contact with a small amount of moisture (around 4% to 6% by weight), a thin film of water forms around the sand grains. Surface tension pushes the particles apart, causing a massive increase in volume—sometimes up to 20% to 30%.

​Practical Impact:
If you measure sand by volume (volumetric batching) without accounting for bulking, your concrete mix will end up starved of sand and structurally weak. Completely saturated sand shows zero bulking.

​The Idea:
In a concrete beam, we want the steel to fail before the concrete does.

​Under-reinforced:
Steel yields first. This gives ample warning (cracking and deflection) before structural failure.

​Over-reinforced:
Concrete crushes suddenly without warning. This is a catastrophic, brittle failure.

​Key Takeaway:
Codes like IS 456 strictly prohibit the design of over-reinforced sections to ensure public safety.
