France spends the largest share of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on social protection and welfare benefits of any country in the world, amounting to around 32.6%. This has drastically increased due to a rapidly rising migrant population that has been a massive net drain on the French state. The answer has to be the remigration of migrants from Europe, as basic welfare protections and institutions like the NHS will simply cease to function while people from all over the world are free to walk into European nations and immediately able to gain welfare.

HOW IMMIGRATION & THE WORLD'S LARGEST WELFARE STATE CAUSED FRANCE TO COLLAPSE:

France’s total public spending on social protection and welfare benefits now sits at approximately 31.5% to 32.6% of its GDP. This is the highest percentage in Europe, and in fact the highest in the entire OECD, far exceeding the OECD average of roughly 21%. When measured against France's total government expenditure – which accounts for roughly 57% of the nation's GDP – this massive allocation means that more than half of all state spending goes strictly toward funding its welfare apparatus. This intensive commitment to welfare benefits has placed severe strain on France's national balance sheet. With an aging population, expanding pension obligations, sluggish economic growth, and a national public debt sitting at a record 119% of GDP, the sustainability of this high welfare spending is the primary trigger of the current French budget crises.

A large part of France’s welfare burden relates to pension payments which go mainly to the aging native French population. So where does multiculturalism factor into this issue? Quite simply, the French establishment has attempted to use immigration as a means of propping up the welfare state – with disastrous effects. Successive French governments have attempted to balance the large outgoings spent on pensions by importing millions of young migrants who were meant to expand the tax base. Effectively, the French state has viewed native French pensioners as a net drain, and have brought in migrants who were meant to become a new stratum of French society who would become net contributors. This has not worked; in fact, the policy of bringing in millions of migrants has actually accelerated and compounded the problem.

Due to what economists term as “structural mismatches” in France's labour market coupled with a redistributive income model, instead of balancing the aging crisis, immigration has introduced its own immediate pressures on the welfare system. According to labour data, the employment rate for non-European immigrants hovers significantly below that of native-born citizens and the unemployment rate for non-EU immigrants has historically been more than double that of the national average. What’s more, this problem is compounded by the fact that a large proportion of the integrated immigrant workforce is employed in low-wage, entry-level sectors such as hospitality, construction and cleaning. As a result of the fact that the French tax system relies heavily on high-bracket income taxes and high-value payroll contributions to fund pensions, low-wage jobs generate very little net tax revenue for the state. In short, most migrants not only take out far more than they put in, but those who do work make such a negligible tax contribution that the overall effect of this wave of migrants is to place another huge drain on an already strained welfare state.

When assessing the facts that back up this assertion, the picture becomes even more bleak. Due to the fact that France boasts the most substantial redistributive safety net in the world, any group with lower employment rates and lower average incomes naturally becomes a heavy user of public assistance. Studies tracking 30 years of fiscal impact in France show that on an individual per-capita basis, immigrants often receive more in direct state transfers (housing aid, family allowances, medical assistance) than they pay in income taxes and social security contributions. While an aging native citizen draws on deferred benefits (pensions they paid into for 40 years), a low-income or unemployed immigrant family often requires immediate cash and structural welfare (such as heavily subsidised social housing or universal healthcare) without a decades-long history of paying into the tax pool. Beyond direct cash transfers, the arrival of younger demographic groups puts localised pressure on non-welfare state budgets. A younger immigrant population requires substantial school infrastructure, specialised language integration programs, and teachers – costs borne entirely by public expenditure. Further to this, overcrowding and limited access to the private housing market mean that roughly 1 in 4 adult immigrants live in temporary or social housing, requiring ongoing state subsidies and development.

A fruitless venture (pun definitely intended)

Two men have been jailed for a total of 28 years after their dangerous driving caused the deaths of a mother and her four-year-old daughter as they walked to school in Leeds.

Justyna Hulboj, 27, and her daughter Lena Czepczor died at the scene after being struck by a white Audi TT on Scott Hall Road shortly after 8.30am on 16 January 2023.

Hardeep Bhachu, 29, of Grant Row, Adel, Leeds, lost control of his car before hitting the mother and daughter and crashing into the wall of a Jaguar dealership.

Bhachu, who pleaded guilty to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving in June 2024, was sentenced to 12 years at Leeds Crown Court today (26 October).

Jasskamal Riyat, 37, of Buckstone Avenue, Moortown, Leeds, was sentenced to 16 years after being convicted of two counts of causing death by dangerous driving following a trial in August.

CCTV and dashcam footage showed the two men, who did not know each other, racing their high-powered cars along the busy dual carriageway immediately before the fatal collision.

Footage from Bhachu’s dashcam captured him boasting to Riyat at traffic lights that his Audi had 560 horsepower and that he had only been using a quarter of its throttle.

Riyat, who was driving a black BMW 135i, witnessed the collision but left the scene without stopping.

Both men were also given six-year driving bans and must pass an extended driving test before driving again.

Detective Inspector Paul Conroy, of West Yorkshire Police, said: “A woman and her young daughter have died because of the actions of these men, and I know no sentence will ever feel enough to compensate for the lives that have been lost.”

In a statement, Justyna’s fiancé and Lena’s father described how his life had been devastated by their deaths.

“When I was informed about their deaths, my whole world collapsed in one second.”

He added: “I know that I will have to live with the burden of losing the two most important people in my life for the rest of my life.”
