The Schiller Institute U.S. War Machine Is Overextended, but the Empire Wonʼt Go Quietly Report on International Peace Coalition, Week 167 by EIR Staff Aug. 14—The 167th consecutive weekly meeting of the International Peace Coalition (IPC) began with remarks…
reign Secretary Lord Palmerston. In response, Falk observed that today’s situation is different, due to technological changes. Also, with the founding of the UN, there was an effort to move away from the Hobbesian anarchy of “might makes right” and toward a Westphalian world order, but the effort was flawed and allowed the dominant players to put their thumbs on the scales. Consequently, the UN Security Council today has enabled the crimes of the neocons against Gaza and Iran.
Zepp-LaRouche said that efforts to remedy this situation are hindered by mainstream media, which present “a narrative which is completely counter to reality.” Ulf Sandmark, president of the Schiller Institute in Sweden, reported on weekly demonstrations there with which they have “attempted to break the spell” of making a taboo of advocacy of diplomatic solutions instead of war. In Sweden, the political parties are squeezing out antiwar politicians, who are also excluded from media coverage. The Schiller Institute is including these politicians in its demonstrations and giving them a voice. Larry Johnson, former CIA intelligence official and a member of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS), noted that Russia has moved from conducting its Special Military Operation in Ukraine, to all-out war. One manifestation of this has been the total shutdown of maritime activity in the Black Sea, which will be devastating for Ukraine. He listed numerous other developments in Russia’s conduct of the war, and compared it to the war in Iran, stating that both wars highlight the “delusional nature” of U.S. policy. Trump proclaims that the Strait of Hormuz is open and “under our control.” If that is the case, why are we running a blockade? The painful economic consequences of the war are completely divorced from the fantasy world of Wall Street, which can make money regardless.
The U.S. military is in trouble, on two fronts: It does not have access to the rare earths and other raw materials required to replenish depleted stocks of armaments; China has almost monopolistic control over those rare earths. Secondly, “the military across the board is in a mental health crisis.” There has been a wave of suicides and other deaths related to deteriorating morale and psychological stress among military personnel. The reports of deaths aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln have significantly underestimated the number of casualties. There will be a political response from the angry parents of the affected servicemen. A ‘Crony Capitalist Monster’
Johnson said that the U.S. military is not the greatest or most powerful military in the world, but it is the most expensive. He cited the astronomical costs of U.S. aircraft and drones, many of which have been destroyed in the war with Iran. He commented on the “profit collaboration” between the military and the private sector. Although “fascism” is a term perhaps too “emotionally charged” to describe it, he characterized this collaboration as a “crony capitalist monster.” Russia and China, operating on military budgets which are tiny in comparison, have achieved greater technical results.
Zepp-LaRouche returned to what Pope Leo XIV calls a “new Tower of Babel.” Peter Thiel, founder of the Silicon Valley tech firm Palantir Technologies, said that members of the billionaire class should not be shy about flaunting their wealth and power. The privation endured by U.S. military personnel stands out by comparison.
Co-moderator Dennis Small reminded the participants that the “military-industrial complex” should be called the “military-industrial-financial complex,” because, as EIR has shown, the largest arms manufacturers in the United States are owned by the leading financial speculators. This, he said, is the Achilles’ heel of the war machine.
Numerous speakers referred to the recent manic activity by so-called “U.S. Deputy Secretary of War” Elbridge Andrew Colby, who has been making the rounds and issuing public comments about U.S. dominan[...]

In response to a question from an African participant, Zepp-LaRouche asserted that colonialism still exists, although typically Europeans are in denial. She said that the IMF exemplifies the new structures of colonialism.
Another participant posed a question about the Oasis Plan, which has been discussed on a regular basis at IPC meetings. Zepp-LaRouche replied that the only thing required would be a commitment by a number of Southwest Asian nations. She speculated that the new Mecca Alliance might be a prospect for this. A “devil’s advocate” asked her whether it was time to reevaluate the tenth of her Ten Principles, the assertion that humans are fundamentally good. Her response was an emphatic no; the current degraded culture cannot be seen as the last word on human nature. We have a long history to consider, and the net improvements in the human condition teach us that humans are essentially good. A dark age can always be overcome by a new renaissance.

Generale Vad: Germania e NATO scherzano col fuoco

Former Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has caused a firestorm by posting on X that she is not speculating when she says that President Trump is contemplating nuclear strikes on Iran.
In a post which has now over five million views, MTG said, “They are discussing using nuclear weapons on Iran in strategy meetings. Yes you read that correctly. It’s real. I’m not speculating, I know. And it’s pure evil.”
White House spokesman Davis Ingle was quick to respond, telling USA Today: “Marjorie ‘Quitter’ Greene has no idea what she is talking about…She is completely out of the loop and should quit spreading Fake News.”
Honesty has not been a strong trait of the Trump administration’s foreign policy, but rather than speculate, given the massive destructive potential of nuclear weapons, every person should mobilize to ensure that a nuclear weapon is not used. Not in Iran and not anywhere else.
Retired German General Harald Kujat, who had been Chairman of the NATO Military Committee two decades ago, had said that the great fear of the Soviet Union, now the Russian Federation, was a Cuban Missile Crisis in reverse. Worse than that, the Russian leadership must know that even before the end of WWII, Britain’s alcoholic Prime Minister Winston Churchill was already contemplating a nuclear first strike against the then Soviet Union.
If one looks at the arc of history from the dropping of the nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which had more to do with threatening Russia than defeating Japan (which had already been defeated), the world has been moving in the direction of nuclear war with a few brief exceptional periods.
The great American statesman and former presidential candidate Lyndon LaRouche warned in 2011, when Muammar Gaddafi was brutally murdered in the streets, that this was preparatory to a war with Russia.
That march toward nuclear war with Russia has been pushed by the Anglo-Zionist Epstein-class billionaires behind successive American presidencies from Barack Obama to Donald Trump’s second term.
The stakes are even higher today because their multi-quadrillion-dollar bubble of speculative obligations is nearing the end of its sustainability. People who think nothing of raping and shooting children at short range will not shy away from using a nuclear weapon. As far as they are concerned, they have two highly compatible objectives:
1. Reduce the world’s population
2. Maintain their monetarist financial dictatorship
The problem they have is that human beings are not animals. As the great poet of freedom, Friedrich Schiller said in his play “Wilhelm Tell,” “There is a limit to a tyrant’s power.” Billions of people in the nations of the BRICS-plus, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the Organization of African Unity, to name a few, reject the old colonial order. They do not believe that might makes right.
China has lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty, and India celebrated 79 years of independence from the British Empire on August 15th.
The way to avoid a thermonuclear Armageddon is for the nations of the West, in particular the United States, to recognize that they have a shared future with the entirety of mankind.
There will soon be a second letter to Pope Leo, signed by prominent peace activists, political leaders, military analysts[...]

Appeal to Pope Leo XIV To Organize a Global Leaders Summit To Address the Questions of Peace and Nuclear Disarmament
The following open letter to Pope Leo XIV was issued on August 19.
We appeal to you, Pope Leo, as the leader who has made the greatest effort to speak for humanity as a whole, instead of for specific nations, religions, or constituencies, to call for an emergency international summit to guide the world away from the current path of war and potential nuclear disaster and to peacefully resolve the greatest crises facing humanity today. Such an effort would be consistent with your repeated calls for peace and justice ever since you assumed the papacy—calls that have inspired and given hope to millions if not billions of people across our planet.
On June 10, 2025, U.S. Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Tulsi Gabbard released a brief but chilling video that began in Hiroshima and warned we are “closer to the brink of nuclear annihilation than ever before” and that “political elite warmongers are carelessly fomenting fear and tensions between nuclear powers.” “It’s up to us, the people,” she concluded, “to speak up and demand an end to this madness. We must reject this path to nuclear war and work toward a world where no one has to live in fear of a nuclear holocaust.”
On October 20, 2025, Sergei Naryshkin, the head of Russia’s SVR foreign intelligence agency, warned, “The world is now experiencing the most fragile moment for international security since World War II.” Naryshkin continued, “Our shared, and perhaps principal, task is to ensure that adaptation to the new reality proceeds without a major war, as has happened at previous historical stages.” It has been many months since the two intelligence chiefs rang the alarm and we’ve only gotten closer to nuclear annihilation—much closer.
When Gabbard and Naryshkin issued those warnings, the war in Ukraine was raging, Israel was conducting its genocide in Gaza, and tensions were high between China and the U.S. over Taiwan and the South China Sea. We have since added the U.S./Israeli war with Iran and the threat of WWIII has thus grown exponentially.
Signs continue to appear that leaders are planning for such an eventuality, even though we have known for more than four decades that even a limited nuclear war, let alone a large-scale one, could unleash unthinkable damage globally, including nuclear winter, which would threaten to end life on our planet. On August 20, 2024, the New York Times ran a front-page article warning that the U.S. was preparing to fight a simultaneous three-front nuclear war against Russia, China, and North Korea. That same day, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists reported on a growing school of nuclear strategists who believe a nuclear war can be fought and won, effectively overturning decades of understanding that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought. Last year, U.S. Admiral Thomas Buchanan said that the U.S. was preparing to fight and win a nuclear war and keep enough nuclear weapons in reserve to be able to maintain its global hegemony. More recently, the U.S. Pentagon policy chief Elbridge Colby has discussed the need for the U.S. to use tactical nuclear weapons on top of deploying troops from South Korea and Japan if fighting breaks out between the U.S. and China over the Taiwan Strait.
The experts behind the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists’ Doomsday Clock are not alone in believing that the world is getting closer and closer to nuclear annihilation. And on top of the threats coming from the U.S., several influential Russian leaders have called on Vladimir Putin to use nuclear weapons in defeating Ukraine.
We, the undersigned from around the world, think the timing is propitious for calling an emergency international summit to [...]

The Schiller Institute Appeal to Pope Leo XIV To Organize a Global Leaders Summit To Address the Questions of Peace and Nuclear Disarmament The following open letter to Pope Leo XIV was issued on August 19. We appeal to you, Pope Leo, as the leader who has…
address major conflicts in the world and the need for stepping away from the nuclear precipice. Russia has been bogged down in Ukraine for almost five years. Though Russia continues to make incremental gains at great cost, the battlefield has largely stalled and both sides are doing extensive damage to energy infrastructure and shipping in their drone and missile warfare, causing global energy and food shortages and suffering both inside and outside their respective countries. If NATO-backed Ukraine continues to cross Russia’s red lines, will Putin be willing and able to thwart Russia’s hawks? The U.S., meanwhile, has been unable to find a diplomatic escape route from its war with Iran, which shows no sign of allowing the U.S. to end the crisis it and Israel created by attacking Iran. While China insists that retaining Taiwan is its ultimate red line, everyone in the region would benefit from a calming of tension and diverting resources into development, along the lines of China’s Belt and Road initiative, instead of into warmaking.
That last point should be applied universally. It is painfully wasteful to see so many nations diverting resources from food, housing, education, and healthcare to their militaries. This has especially been true in North America, Europe, and Asia where talk of peacefully resolving conflicts has given way to talk of preparing for war.
As you yourself wisely and powerfully stated a couple of months ago, “I have repeated more than once the fervent appeal that Saint Paul VI made to the United Nations Assembly—What unites me, my venerable predecessor noted, is a pact sealed ‘with an oath that ought to change the future history of the world: never again war, never again war! It is peace, peace, that has to guide the destiny of the nations of all mankind’! Above all in the atomic era, the affirmation of the truth must push through: it is not atomic weapons that generate peace, but disarmament. This truth, which seemed clear in past decades when we witnessed a nuclear de-escalation, has been obscured by a race to armament that today frightens and terrifies.”
It was indeed Pope Paul VI, the first pope to address the United Nations in October 1965, who, in that extraordinary address, quoted President Kennedy, “Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind.” He cited the Book of Isaiah, declaring, “They shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.” In his 1967 Encyclical “Populorum Progressio,” Pope Paul VI emphasized, “Development is the new name for Peace.”
Other popes have also taken bold initiatives to save humanity in moments of crisis. In October 1962, Pope John XXIII appealed for peaceful resolution of the Cuban Missile Crisis and helped provide both President Kennedy and Premier Khrushchev with face-saving means to resolve the crisis diplomatically rather than militarily at a moment when war seemed imminent. A similar effort might succeed today when the world’s two major wars seem to be intractably bogged down. (see “Letter To Archbishop John Wester, To Urge Pope Leo XIV to Call for a Peace Conference“) The same is true of the nuclear arms race as the nine nuclear powers are not only modernizing their arsenals but expanding them after decades of sensible if much too slow reductions. And, for the first time in decades, the two major nuclear antagonists are constrained by no nuclear arms control treaties. Other countries, including Japan, South Korea, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, and Ukraine, have begun discussing the attainment of nuclear weapons of their own, which would only turn the world into a larger nuclear tinderbox.
A papal appeal for an emergency summit to end the current wars and reverse the growing dependence on nuclear weapons and warfighting might give global leaders the chance to select a new course of action and get us off the current drive toward planet-destroying nuclear war. We urge you, Pope Leo, to use your unique moral authority to convene such a meeting of the wo[...]

Don't Be Fooled, It's Still the City of London

Sare Campaigns in Iowa; Black Iowa News Runs Long Interview
Aug. 24, 2026 (EIRNS)—Independent presidential candidate Diane Sare campaigned in Iowa beginning Aug. 20, meeting farmers and veterans and visiting the Iowa State Fair and the Henry Wallace house. On Aug. 23, Black Iowa News published a long interview with her, conducted by founder and publisher Dana James. The article cites Sare’s success in getting on the ballot for U.S. Senator from New York in 2022 and 2024 and notes that she is running with Jose Vega.
Asked what independent candidates can offer Black voters, Sare answered on economics. “Freedom and equality—it means nothing unless there’s a physical economic basis for it,” she said. “I think that our nation needs a mission, because if we have a certain quality of unity for a mission, everything is going to look different, and we’re going to be looking for the talent and the potential. We throw so many people on a scrap heap right now… Now, if your nation is saying, ‘Look, we need 42,000 miles of high-speed rail, and we need to figure out how to get to Mars, and we need to cure Parkinson’s,’ then you can’t throw people away. You’re going to need every single person.”
On culture, Sare discussed Antonín Dvořák’s National Conservatory in New York, funded by Jeannette Thurber in the 1890s, and the Black composers who came out of it—H.T. Burleigh and Hall Johnson—before it was destroyed under Jim Crow. Dvořák, she said, had concluded that “the kernel of a great and noble school of American music is the Negro spiritual and the Native American music.” Knowing that history matters, she argued, because “then you say, ‘Well, of course it’s normal for an African American to be a genius.’”
She told Iowans the situation is worse than they know on two fronts. “We are potentially very close to a nuclear war… you have people now discussing using tactical nuclear weapons.” And on the economy she pointed to the Strait of Hormuz, fertilizer shortages and “the spring planting that didn’t happen,” warning of a food crisis this autumn: “The cattle herd is the smallest it’s been in 75 years.”
For Iowa specifically she advocated the North American Water and Power Alliance, citing Des Moines’s water problems.
“These billionaire perverts who are running things will never give up their power willingly,” she said. “But if they go into a free-fall collapse, we have an opportunity to change everything.”

Who Is Pushing for Nuclear War?
International Peace Coalition, Week 168
Aug. 21—On August 21 the International Peace Coalition (IPC) held its 168th consecutive weekly meeting which Helga Zepp-LaRouche, founder of the Schiller Institute and initiator of the IPC said may be our most important meeting ever. Two regional wars threaten to go out of control, and the use of tactical nuclear weapons is now a topic for casual discussion. This has been recently confirmed by former U.S. Congresswoman Majorie Taylor Greene who said that she is not guessing when she says that there is an open discussion in the Pentagon, or in the President Donald Trump administration, of using tactical nuclear weapons, but rather she knows from direct sources that this is a live discussion. Elbridge Colby, the so-called “U.S. Under Secretary of War for Policy,” has confirmed on the record that the Pentagon is re-examining U.S. nuclear employment guidance in order to give the President what he calls “rational nuclear options” in a regional conflict with Russia or China—and he maintains that, unlike U.S. Nuclear Posture Reviews, this does not need to be approved by Congress or even be made public.
Zepp-LaRouche said that President Trump should admit that he has lost the war in Iran, but instead he is vacillating between saying he is talking to the Iranians and saying there are no talks—most recently warning of crushing sanctions against Iran and any country working with them. However, Iran has survived 47 years of sanctions, and it is the United States which is bankrupt with the federal deficit now passing the $40 trillion mark. According to media reports, Iranian officials threatened to attack U.S. military bases in Europe if the U.S. intensifies the war. Israel continues the genocide in Gaza, but has been committing similar atrocities in the West Bank. But President Trump is unable or unwilling to control Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The fighting in Ukraine is also escalating, but all of these wars are a consequence of the economic crisis, and the desire by western countries to maintain the 500-year-old colonial system of looting. Zepp-LaRouche stressed the urgency to circulate the letter which appeals to Pope Leo XIV to intervene by calling for a summit of global leaders to address the need of peace and nuclear disarmament. At least two former heads of state have already signed the letter. Ray McGovern, the retired CIA analyst and founding member of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS), said that he started the day this morning the same way he starts every morning—reading the news from EIR. He highly recommended that people read an article by Jason Ross. McGovern questioned how Elbridge Colby could even talk about changing official nuclear doctrines without first consulting with the Russians. McGovern said that he has been watching the Russians and the Soviets before them for over six decades, and said that the Russians are “an open book,” and make their nuclear policy crystal clear. Colby is “still wet behind the ears” with no experience and no understanding of what war is. McGovern used to brief Colbyʼs father on the Russians. Elbridge Colby wrote that he wants “nuclear superiority,” but McGovern said that this is not possible and that nobody will be superior in a nuclear war, which is why it is called “Mutually Assured Destruction.”
McGovern stressed that President Trump is not well physically nor psychologically and could lead the world into a nuclear war either deliberately, accidentally, or by responding to an Israeli “false flag” provocation. This Israeli instigation is how President Trump started the Iran War. Iran controls the Strait of Hormuz which is the equivalent of holding a nuclear weapon. Would Trump respond with a nuclear weapon? Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson recently spoke on the Judging Freedom[...]
