M+ Market Update – 03Feb25
Volatility To Rise After Trump’s Tariffs

The FBMKLCI recovered slightly from its downward pressure as bargain hunting activities were seen in banking and utility heavyweights. Meanwhile, Wall Street closed lower following President Trump’s tariffs implementation on Canada, Mexico, and China, which took effect on Saturday. Technology sector remained a key focus driven by the rise of China’s AI startup, DeepSeek. This week, traders will closely monitor the (i) ISM Manufacturing and Non-Manufacturing PMIs, (ii) initial jobless claims, and (iii) US unemployment rate. In the commodities market, Brent Crude is trading close to USD76 per barrel, while gold prices charged toward an all-time high of USD2,817 before closing slightly below the USD2,800 mark. Meanwhile, CPO prices broke above their short term RM4,278 resistance level.

Sector Focus: Given last Friday’s sell-offs in Wall Street and the ongoing negative sentiment in Wall Street futures following President Trump’s tariff remarks, we expect the local bourse to mirror the US performance. Investors are likely to shift toward defensive sector like REIT in view of their defensive characteristic and strong quarterly performances due to higher net property income. Meanwhile, we believe renewable energy will remain on traders’ radar, driven by various government initiatives, including NETR and LSS and CGPP.

Asian markets trade in sea of red on first volley of US tariffs

• Asian indices are opening in the red on its first full week of trading following the Lunar New Year break. The Hang Seng Index February futures are 1.7% lower to 19,987 as of 1037AM, the Hang Seng Tech Feb futures down 1.4% to 4,638 while the Nikkei225 March futures are down 2.8% to 38,510. The gloomy open matches the 2% drop in US index futures of Nasdaq and S&P.

• Consequently, put warrants are amongst the top gainers this morning, with the two US index put warrants tracking the Nasdaq-100 and S&P500 up more than 45%, while put warrants tracking the Nikkei225 are 25% to 34% higher.

• The fall in the indices reflect the reaction to Trump's executive orders on Saturday which placed an additional 25% tariff on all goods imported from Mexico and Canada (excluding energy at 10%) as well as an additional 10% tariff on Chinese imports. The rationale is tied to "an extraordinary threat posed by illegal aliens and drugs" rather than specific trade issues, though trade deficits with these countries were cited.

• The order states that tariffs will remain in place "until the crisis is alleviated." The only guideline as to what this would entail is "upon the President’s determination of sufficient action to alleviate the crisis." This implies a highly subjective interpretation of if China can ever comply.

• At the same time, the order notes that retaliation could "increase or expand in scope the duties imposed." This implies that the US is already looking to further increase trade tensions. China may take a more moderate approach to potential negotiations and may not look to further worsen trade ties.

• Following the additional tariffs imposed, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau unveiled a 25% counter-tariff on $107 billion of US goods, while Mexican leader Claudia Sheinbaum pledged retaliatory levies.

• China’s reaction was more muted. China's Commerce Ministry issued a statement expressing strong “dissatisfaction” and vowing “corresponding countermeasures,” without elaborating. It pledged to file a complaint at the World Trade Organization and called on the US to “manage differences on the basis of equality, mutual benefit and mutual respect.”

• Some analysts believe that Trump’s action “is less severe than market participants and Chinese policymakers feared,” while others think there may be potential for more antagonistic actions against China in the future given several prominent hawks in the current administration.

• Investors worried about further pullbacks in global markets can consider using put warrants to hedge against downside moves. View their live matrix here.

Bursa Malaysia Midday Recap: Market Slips Amid Tariff Concerns

The FBM KLCI is trending downward today after a brief rebound last Friday, following the US president's decision to impose import tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China. Market sentiment remains weak, with risk-off sectors in the red except for healthcare. Glove counters dominated healthcare trading activity, while the construction sector continues to show strength, led by GAMUDA and IJM. Meanwhile, LEBTECH secured a MYR 21 million contract in Selangor. Key events to watch this week include BNM's international reserves update and the US Non-Farm Payroll report on 7 Feb (Friday).

With construction gaining momentum, analysts highlighted PRTASCO (Resistance: MYR 0.430; Stop Loss: MYR 0.320) as a trading opportunity in today’s Traders’ Almanac post. For more insights, check the full report in the Insights tab on your Maybank Trade MY app.
