M+ Market Update – 28Jan25
The Reverse Of AI Theme?

The FBMKLCI began the week in negative territory due to the ongoing sell-offs in YTL-related counters, following the Group's plan to issue an inflexible 1-for-5 bonus warrant. Meanwhile, Wall Street closed lower after a low-cost AI model from the Chinese startup DeepSeek climbed to the top of Apple’s App Store, sparking concerns over the premium valuations of technology stocks. Traders will closely watch (i) US economic growth, (ii) unemployment claims, and (iii) the core PCE index. In the commodities market, Brent Crude oil remained below USD80, while gold prices snapped a 5-day winning streak, closing below USD2,740 an ounce. CPO prices traded flat at around RM4,200.

Sector Focus: Mirroring the softer tone of the US market performance, the KLCI is set to open lower. Although gold prices have pulled back, we believe traders may focus on the still-elevated gold price and trade the proxies in the near term amid uncertain environment following the Wall Street sell-off triggered by the rise of DeepSeek. Nevertheless, we believe domestic-themed plays may take the lead, driven by (i) RM9billion tenders for the Penang LRT project, (ii) JSSEZ initiatives, and (iii) the potential emergence of Sarawak as an energy hub.

🎊 *Busy with CNY? No Worries, We’ve Got You Covered!* 🏮

Markets are moving, but we’ll keep it simple so you can enjoy your CNY break! Here’s what you need to know:

📢 *Fed Holds Rates (4.25%-4.50%)* – No rush to cut as inflation is still high. Powell says the economy is solid, so expect steady rates for now. Stocks dipped slightly, with S&P 500 -0.5% and Nasdaq -0.5%.

🚗 *Tesla*: Earnings missed expectations, but Elon Musk is focused on self-driving cars & humanoid robots. He claims Tesla could be the world’s most valuable company and expects a big year ahead for Full Self-Driving (FSD) and AI. An epic future ahead but execution will be key.

📱 *Meta*: Strong 21% revenue growth, driven by AI and digital ads. Meta AI now has 700M+ active users, positioning Meta as a key AI player. Big investments ahead, but the company remains highly profitable.

💻 *Microsoft*: Revenue grew 12%, but Azure cloud growth (31%) fell short of high expectations. AI-related revenue surged 175%, yet cautious guidance led to a 5% stock drop after hours.

🛠️ *ASML*: The chip industry is booming, and ASML crushed earnings with a 10% stock surge. Demand for EUV lithography machines remains strong as AI drives semiconductor growth.

*Key Takeaway?* AI & Tech still dominate despite short-term market swings. Relax and enjoy your CNY break—we’ll keep you updated!

M+ Market Update – 31Jan25
Bargain Hunting To Emerge

The FBMKLCI extended its losses as global sentiment weakened amid concerns over the rise of a low-cost AI model from the Chinese startup DeepSeek. Meanwhile, Wall Street closed higher following quarterly results from Tesla and Meta, despite the Fed indicated of a slower easing interest rate environment ahead. Traders will closely watch upcoming data, including (i) the core PCE index and (ii) the employment cost index later today. In the commodities market, Brent Crude rebounded above USD76 per barrel mark, while gold prices charged towards all-time-high above USD2,790 and CPO prices stablised above RM4,270.

Sector Focus: After the sell-offs in the past few trading sessions, we believe the FBMKLCI is set to open higher, as bargain-hunting could emerge within the Technology sector, taking cue from Wall Street. Also, we opine that trading interest will pick up in gold-related counters as gold hit all-time-high, despite the hawkish stance from the Fed. Besides, we believe domestic-themed play may take the lead driven by (i) ongoing Penang LRT project RM9bn tenders, (ii) JSSEZ initiatives, and (iii) the potential emergence of Sarawak as an energy hub. Lastly, we see trading opportunity on DSONIC, after securing contract extension of passport chips to Malaysia immigration department.
