UK-US Agree On Trade Deal

US: With progress toward de-escalation of the trade war—President Trump announced a trade deal with the UK, signalling a potential rollback of tariffs on Chinese goods, risk-on sentiment emerged on Wall Street and was traded higher. Also, the market appears optimistic ahead of next week’s US-China meeting in Switzerland. In the US, META presents trading opportunities, supported by its +16% YoY topline growth which exceeded analysts’ forecasts, while the recovery in users and ads spending should support the share price going forward. In commodities, Brent crude oil edged higher toward USD63/bbl, while gold traded around USD3,316 zone. CPO prices hovered between RM3,800–3,900/MT.

MY: In view of the positive performance in the US, we expect the local bourse to rebound as Bursa Finance index has risen 8% since the April 9 low, further supported by the 100bps cut in the Statutory Reserve Requirement—which injected approximately RM19bn in liquidity into the banking system. Traders may look for trading opportunities in lagging banking stocks such as Alliance and AmBank. Meanwhile, we noticed the AI theme has regained momentum following the potential revision of the Biden’s administration’s chip restriction act. This could spur trading interest in the Construction, Utility and Technology sectors.

FBM KLCI: 1,546.50 pts (+3.76pts, +0.24%)
Despite regional markets ended on a mixed tone, the FBMKLCI (+0.24%) closed the Friday session on a positive note, buoyed by gains in PMETAL (+14.0 sen) and PETDAG (+56.0 sen). This came after BNM lowered the statutory reserve requirement, which is expected to boost the economy and lift sentiment on the local front. Market breadth was rather mixed, with 459 losers against 454 winners. In the broader market, Energy (+1.02%) outperformed following the rebound in crude oil prices, while Telecommunications & Media (-0.29%) declined the most.

Lifted By US-China 90-Day Truce

US: Wall Street advanced following a breakthrough in the US-China trade relations, with both nations agreed to a 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs. US will reduce tariffs on Chinese imports to 30%, while China will cut duties on American goods to 10% and we expect market to trend higher in the near to mid-term. Meanwhile, Apple gained support from reports suggesting that it may raise iPhone prices independently of tariffs, reinforcing investor confidence in the tech sector resilience. In commodities, Brent crude oil is trading close to USD65/bbl, while gold traded flat around USD3,236 level. Lastly, CPO prices rebounded above RM3,800/MT.

MY: Following the 90-day rollback in US-China tariffs, positive sentiment is expected to spill over into the local and regional markets, especially the tech sector. Meanwhile, as TENAGA doubles its budgeted capex to RM42.9bn to support renewable energy and NETR infrastructure development, we maintain our positive stance on renewable energy, data centres, and construction players. Lastly, we believe trading opportunities will persist in counters like LCTITAN, SAMCHEM, and SCGM following Malaysia’s 5-year imposition of anti-dumping duties on synthetic polymer (PET) from Indonesia and China, starting May 7. PET is a key material in the textile, packaging, and manufacturing industries.

FBM KLCI: 1,582.39 pts (+35.89pts, +2.32%)
With the recent progress toward the de-escalation of the trade war and the temporary trade deal between the US and China to slash tariffs, the impact of President Trump’s protectionist trade policies faded, providing a feel good factor for the global markets and lifted the local bourse by +2.32% led by gains in Banking heavyweights. The Feel-Good Tariff Truce Could Last

US: Wall Street traded higher as US inflation came in softer-than-expected in April, with headline CPI rising 2.3% YoY, the lowest since February 2021, while core inflation also moderated, easing market concerns. We believe the overall sentiment will stay positive on Wall Street and investors will continue to monitor Fed Chair Powell’s speech, anticipating a more dovish Fed stance, while keeping an eye on key economic data like PPI, retail sales and crude oil inventories throughout the week. In commodities, Brent oil edged higher toward USD66/bbl, while gold hovered around USD3,250. CPO prices are approaching toward RM3,900/MT.

MY: Following the rally on Wall Street, we expect further upside in Malaysia’s Technology sector after the US-China tariff truce, coupled with news that the Trump administration formally rescinded the Biden-era AI Diffusion Rule, boosting to optimism in local tech counters. On the flip side, the US-China trade deal is seen as negative for Malaysian glove players, as it makes Chinese gloves more competitively priced and may hurt demand for Malaysian gloves. Besides, we believe trading opportunities will extend within the Steel sector like HIAPTEK, MELEWAR and MASTEEL, as Malaysia is set to impose anti-dumping duties on steel and tinplate from China and other Asian nations.
