Bursa Malaysia Midday Recap: Risk-Off Continues

The FBM KLCI printed another red day as the US reported a softer-than-expected unemployment rate last Friday. Broad market sentiment remained in bear territory too, risk-off sectors remained mostly flat while plantations outperformed as select heavy weights rebound. Within financials, CIMB seems to be attempting a rebound with strong volume after last week’s sell-off. Given the weak US unemployment data, investors will be eying out for Wed’s US CPI (8.30pm) and Thur’s US PPI (8.30pm) prints for clues on potential rate cuts.

With global risks lingering, investors looking for a defensive stock to weather the current volatility may want to consider RHBBANK (Target Price: MYR 7.70; FY25E Dividend Yield: 6.3%). 🌐 What macro data could move US and China this week?

• Tuesday night: US job openings for January. In December, job openings fell more than anticipated, reaching 7.6 million, down from November's upwardly revised figure of 8.2 million, and the upcoming release will offer further insight into whether the downtrend that began in March 2022 has continued.

• Wednesday night: US CPI for February will be released, where consensus predicts that the headline inflation will remain steady at +3.0% year on year, while core inflation is expected to decelerate slightly to +3.2% year on year, down from the previous +3.3% year on year.

• Thursday night: US PPI for February is expected to increase by +0.2% month on month.

• Exact day unknown: China's credit data for February is expected to reach RMB2.7 trillion, compared to RMB1.5 trillion a year ago. New RMB loans are expected to reach RMB1.2 trillion, compared to RMB1.5 trillion a year ago.

As a result, credit growth could rebound to 8.3% year on year in February from 8.0% year on year in January. The biggest tailwind comes from front-loaded government bond issuance, which should reach around RMB1.7 trillion in February (vs. RMB600 billion a year ago).

On the other hand, new RMB loans should be dragged down by slowing new home sales and local debt swaps, as local governments use bond proceeds to repay existing loans.

• Investors keen to trade any potential impact the macro data may have on the broad indices can do so via Macquarie's focus U.S. index and Hang Seng Index warrants for their ability to magnify the moves in the underlying index futures while requiring a lower capital outlay.

• As an example, HSI call warrant HSI-CWA5 has spiked 73.2% week-on-week to RM0.485, over 13 times more than the HSI index futures' 5.5% rally to 24,238 (as of last Friday’s close). HSI put warrant HSI-PWD5 on the other hand, is down 47.6% to RM0.110 over the same period.

M+ Market Update – 11Mar25
Selling Pressure May Spillover To The Local Fron

The local bourse began the week underwater, as sentiment was dampened by losses in Utilities and Telco & Media heavyweights. Similarly, Wall Street traded negatively as risk-off sentiment persisted. We opine that the new US trade policies could lead to increased retaliation from its trade partners, potentially slowing the global economy. This week, traders will closely monitor (i) US Inflation Data, (ii) U.S. Producer Price Index, and (iii) US Unemployment Claims to gauge the outlook for monetary policy and overall economic sentiment. On the commodities market, both Brent crude oil and Gold traded below USD69 per barrel and USD2,890 per ounce, respectively. Similarly, CPO prices hovered around RM4,488.

Sector Focus: In view of weaker sentiment abroad, selling pressure may persist on the local front. However, we expect traders to turn towards sector that are relatively stable and defensive at this juncture as a more conservative approach. We still favour the Banking sector, and we expect bargain hunting to emerge, given the sector is supported by stable loan growth and appealing dividends, while REITs could gain traction amid recovering footfall. Besides, we remain positive on ITMAX, as we see its venture into Penang driving stronger earnings growth moving forward.

Stocks to watch:

Technology: *ITMAX*, *MCLEAN*
Renewable Energy: PEKAT
Logistics: WPRTS
Financial: *OSK*
Telco: *TM*
Construction: *SUNCON*
Utility: YTL
REITs: IGBREIT
