Despite the upbeat sentiment, market breadth remained negative, with 517 losers outpacing 424 winners. On the sectoral front, Utilities (+0.61%) outperformed, while Energy (-0.40%) declined the most. The Technology sector (+0.19%), which opened weaker following President Trump’s announcement of 100% tariffs on semiconductors, staged a late recovery and ended the day higher.

M+ Global Market Update – 08Aug25
Tariff Tensions Persisted Despite Apple-Fuelled Rally

US: Wall Street ended mixed as tech resilience, led by Apple’s USD100bn investment pledge, offset broader market concerns. Persisting trade tensions, including President Trump’s 100% semiconductor tariff and a 50% tariff on India, have reignited fears of a global slowdown, which may contribute to a more cautious environment. Meanwhile, softer jobless data also lifted September rate cut odds to 94%. In the commodities market, both Brent crude and gold retreated further toward USD66.4/bbl and RM4,240/MT respectively, while gold traded higher at USD3,396.4/oz.

MY: We expect the local bourse to take a breather after 3-day winning streak ahead of the weekend. However, we remain positive on selected Technology stocks despite concerns over President Trump’s announcement of a 100% tariff on semiconductors as counters like INARI and FRONTKN may stand to benefit from Apple’s additional USD100bn investment in US manufacturing. Besides, with the government’s strong push for renewable energy, underpinned by initiatives such as the NETR, CRESS, and LSS projects, traders may continue to look for trading ideas in solar-related counters, including SLVEST, SUNLOGY, and NORTHERN.

FBM KLCI: 1,556.98 pts (+7.87pts, +0.51%)
Despite the broader market sell-offs in the Asian region, the FBMKLCI (+0.51%) bucked the trend and closed higher at 1,556.98 pts, buoyed by gains in PETGAS (+52.0 sen) and CIMB (+8.0 sen). Meanwhile, market breadth remained bearish, with 541 losers against 448 winners. Sector-wise, the Plantation (+1.05%) sector emerged as the best performer, led by gains in SDG (+8.0 sen) and IOICORP (+5.0 sen), as the former reported better-than-expected 1H25 results, hitting 60% of the consensus full-year estimates. Meanwhile, the Consumer Products & Services (-0.64%) sector declined the most.

M+ Global Market Update – 11Aug25
Market Sentiment To Stay Positive

US: Wall Street closed the week on a high note despite President Trump’s recent announcement of a 100% semiconductor tariff, a 50% tariff on India, and mixed earnings results from Technology players. However, we expect the market sentiment to stay positive due to Apple’s USD100bn investment pledge, which may spark trading opportunities within the US Banking, Construction and Technology sectors. This week, traders will monitor key inflation data such as CPI and PPI. In the commodities market, Brent oil retreated further towards USD65/bbl, while Gold and CPO remained stable at USD3,939/oz and RM4,255/MT, respectively.

MY: With Wall Street’s positive lead, we expect buying interest to spill over into the local bourse. Moreover, we favour ITMAX for its (i) steady stream of project wins in Johor, (ii) potential to replicate Johor’s success in Penang, as well as (iii) strong recurring revenue base, typically spanning over 5–10 years. Meanwhile, INARI and FRONTKN remain in focus as we view these counters as key proxies to Apple’s additional USD100bn manufacturing investment and the recent announcement of a 100% tariff on semiconductors. For the utilities sector, we believe that (i) Tenaga’s CapEx rollout extending until year-end, and (ii) the government’s strong push towards renewable energy initiatives such as NETR, CRESS, and LSS, warrant continued investor attention on counters like MNHLDG, UUE, KJTS, and SCGBHD.

Taking cue from Wall Street’s positive lead, Monday’s session saw the local bourse continue to recover from the month’s low, with resilient buying interest in PBBANK (+7.0 sen) and CIMB (+8.0 sen), spurring gains in the Banking sector. M+ Global Market Update – 12Aug25
Profit-Taking Activities May Emerge

US: With little progress towards de-escalating trade tensions, Wall Street began the week on a negative tone. However, President Trump signed an executive order extending the tariff truce with China for another 90 days. Nevertheless, we believe traders should focus on Apple’s USD100bn investment pledge, which could trigger spillover effects across the Banking, Construction, and Technology sectors. This week, traders will keep an eye on key inflation data, including CPI and PPI. In the commodities market, Brent oil remained stable at USD66/bbl, while Gold retreated towards USD3,344/oz. CPO prices rose to RM4,372/MT.

MY: In view of a slight pullback on Wall Street, we expect profit taking activities to emerge on the local front. However, we believe the Technology sector may stay focus on the back of key investment of USD100bn by Apple Inc in the US, which may provide a sentiment boost for INARI and FRONTKN. Meanwhile, we favour ITMAX given its steady stream of project wins in Johor, Penang and Selangor. On the utilities front, we expect the sector the benefit from (i) Tenaga’s CapEx rollout and (ii) key government initiatives like NETR and LSS; we favour MNHLDG, UUE, KJTS, and SCGBHD. For a more conservative play, we believe KPJ could ride on the silver economy as demand for healthcare is expected to increase going forward.
