Green Herons have been observed placing small feathers ( and even fish food pellets found in a public park) on the surface of the water and then watching for small fish that come to the bait. Snowy Egrets often dabble the tip of their bill in the water to mimic a disturbance such as an insect struggling on the surface then catch any fish that come near.

The ducks is hit from above as it flies, and often doesn't see the falcon coming. The falcon hits its prey with its feet, and the impact of being struck by a two-pound falcon traveling at over 200 miles per hour stuns or kills the duck instantly.

Crows are able to recognize us by our faces, and they associate each person with good or bad experiences. Furthermore, they can communicate that information to other crows.

Birds produce sound with the syrinx, which differs from our larynx by being made of two parts and located deeper in the respiratory tract at the point where the two airways from the left and right lungs and airs sacs join to form the trachea. Two complex sets of tiny muscles control airflow through the two sides independently, allowing the birds to produce two different sounds at the same time. In many songbirds the two sides are slightly different. These species produce higher sounds with one side and lower sounds with the other.

Many birds bob their heads back and forth as they walk, and they do it to help keep their vision fixed on their surroundings... In experiments where pigeons walk on a treadmill or are blindfolded (so that the view does not change), they do not bob their heads.

If a rooster crowed in your ear, the sound would be as loud as if you were standing two hundred feet from a jet engine. (Neither is recommended!).

Why do the wings of Mourning Doves make a whistling sound on takeoff?... the sound of a normal relaxed take off caused no reaction, but the sound of a panicked takeoff (higher pitched and with quicker wing beats) caused doves and the other birds to flee in alarm... Wing sounds are also used in the dove's courtship displays, so it's possible that the sound evolved mainly for that purpose, with the alarm function being a nice extra benefit.

Much of what birds do depends on an incredibly precise sense of body position, such as balancing on a tiny twig, standing on one leg, and negotiating the intricacies of flying... Having a motion sensor in the pelvis, along with one in the head (in the inner ear, much like ours), means they can keep track of the movement of two body parts independently. If their body is moving up and down because their perch is swaying, they can compensate for that while keeping their head stationary. Or if they spin their head around in rapid scanning or preening, it doesn't affect their ability to balance; they know that only their head is moving, not their body.
