Recent advances in medicine have resulted in an increase in life expectancy over the past four years.

What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages?

People now can enjoy longer lives thanks to recent improvements in medicine and healthcare. This development can be characterized as both advantageous and disadvantageous.

To start, a rise in human lifespan can prove beneficial in several ways. One of the most obvious benefits is more workforce for the nations of the world. Since more and more people tend to live longer lives and enjoy better well-being at an old age, retirement age can be reset to 70 or above. This means labor shortage will no longer be of major concern to countries, especially the ones with greying populations such as Germany and Italy. One other merit is that old people can enjoy more family time. It is true that most people tend to spend their young ages working, away from home, which means rather insufficient time for family. Despite this, having sustained their well-being with the help of modern medicine, they can afford few more years in the company of their children and grandchildren.

Nevertheless, longer life expectancy is not virtuous in all respects. As well as solving the labor shortage issue, such a development might also saturate the labor market for young people. As employers can retain old workers without much concern over loss of productivity, there will be fewer job prospects available for young demographics. This, as a result, means economic hardships for young people. More worryingly, increased human lifespan is bound to lead to over-population, which is often followed by a set of socio-economic and environmental problems. These problems range from food and space shortage to environmental degradation as a result of growing demand for resources.

In conclusion, while the main positives of longer life expectancy with the aid of advanced medicine are more labor force and more chances for senior people to spend time with family, the negatives can be limited job opportunities for young people and various issues arising from overpopulation.

Some people say that a lot of the scientific research done today is a waste of time and money. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

A large amount of scientific research being carried out in many areas these days is regarded by some people as a waste of valuable resources, such as time and money. While I agree that this might be the case in some disciplines of science, I don’t deem expending time and money on other science domains useless.

Admittedly, investing millions of dollars and years in science spheres like space exploration and geology can be fruitless. It has been predicted in 1950s that the humanity will colonize other planets with might support life such as Mars over the next three decades. However, neither the former USSR nor the USA were able to accomplish it, and even a lot of money and time is being squandered to no avail, because there is no definite proof that we will one day be able to live there. The same holds true for geological research; despite having access to state-of-the-art technology developed over many years, researchers had been unable to predict accurately the occurrence of earthquakes in Turkey and Syria that claimed thousands of lives and dealt catastrophic damage. In this regard, space exploration and geological research could be seen as a waste of precious resources.

However, expending money and time on the fields of medicine and chemistry is surely worth it. This is because we have solid proofs of pieces of research done in these. For example, were it not COVID-19 vaccines, fruits of extensive medical research, probably a large proportion of humans would probably pass away in 2020 and 2021. Chemistry is another area of research, which proved itself worthy of billions of dollars of expenditure and dozens of years of time. Conveniences including but not limited to cheap, artificial fibers that replaced cotton, plastic pipes carrying running water, and soundproof windows in our homes are all results of chemical research.

In conclusion, on disciplines of science - where humans have little control over - such as space and geological research, expending time and money might be of no use. Nevertheless, this is not true when it comes to other areas of scientific research like medicine and chemistry.

In some countries, there are fewer young people who listen to or play classical music these days.

Why is this?

Should young people be encouraged to play or perform classical music?

Classical music has fallen out of favor among youngsters in some parts of the world. While the causes of this trend vary, I believe efforts should be made to encourage this age group to pursue this genre of music.
One of the chief reasons why the number of young people interested in classical music is in the minority has to do with cultural illiteracy. That is, most young people grow up listening to modern musicians like Jay-Z, Eminem, and BeyoncΓ© while being entirely unaware of the cultural significance of classical era artists such as Mozart and Beethoven. Though some young people are taught pieces of classical musicians as part of the school curriculum, the majority disregard such a rich facet of our culture. Moreover, learning to play classical music often proves a daunting task for many young people. This is because instruments used in this genre – the piano, violin, and cello – take many years to master, unlike less challenging ones like the guitar, which takes a relatively short period of time.

Regardless of the above-mentioned reasons, I am strongly in favor of having the young learn to play some form of classical music. This is primarily because it helps them enhance their cognitive performance. Many studies have confirmed marked mental stimulation as a result of exposure to classical music. As such, not only does learning to perform classical music make people of young age more artistic, but also display improved performance in the school context. Playing classical music also helps young people develop desirable qualities like discipline and consistence, seeing as mastering a complex musical instrument like the piano requires sustained practice of the instrument. Hence, in an attempt to learn to play this type of music, young people learn to become patient and persistent.

In conclusion, even though the growing disinterest of young people in classical music is for several reasons, this music genre has a great deal to offer in terms of heightened mental activation and positive personal traits.

Online education and training is becoming increasingly popular in the business world. Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

Distance learning has lately been growing in popularity in the world of business, with more and more people in the industry choosing online training over traditional one. This development is both advantageous and disadvantageous in equal measure.

To start, the popularity of online learning in business can be seen as a change for the better. The most immediate upside is clearly more efficiency enabled by an extensive use of technology. When taking an online course, trainees are often expected to use online tools such as spreadsheets and business-related software applications, which allows for faster acquisition and more productivity. Besides, as opposed to receiving training in person, there is little cost associated with online means of learning. This is because one generally spends no time and money on commuting. In this sense, online learning proves itself convenient not only in the business world, but also many other dimensions of life.

On the other hand, online education is not without its downsides, and it is even more so in the corporate world. The main negative aspect of distance learning can be its efficacy. Since this form of training often involves little-to-no hands-on experience, trainees are left with small tangible results. As a result, most people subscribed to online learning tend to fail when they are confronted with challenges in the real world. In addition, staying grounded can prove challenging to participants who would rather learn through conventional means; instances of people quitting online occupational programs are in the majority.

In conclusion, while the chief benefits of online training in the business world are an efficiency boost in learning and convenience, lack of first-hand experience and discipline are some possible drawbacks.

All clothing shops should ask customers to recycle an old item of clothing before they buy a new one.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

It has been suggested that all stores specializing in selling clothes should demand its customers to recycle old clothing items before their next purchase. To my mind, this suggestion is worth exploring further, though I should admit that it may not be an entirely practical one.

In realistic terms, this so-called β€œrecycle your old clothes” policy can prove difficult to implement for several reasons. The most common one is perhaps the sentimental value an old article of clothing holds to the wearer. Most people keep their clothes from earlier years because they remind them of a particular phase in their life. In many instances, including mine, mothers keep outfits their children wear over the years so that one day they can reminisce old days together through these items. Besides, it is not uncommon to see some people gift their old clothes to their relatives or friends, which, in a sense, makes for recycling.

I would, however, argue that there are many upsides to recycling old clothes. From an economic standpoint, recycling clothes costs less, hence can be bought at much lower prices than new ones. Their price point makes them an appealing option not only to thrifty customers, who always look to make savings, but also store owners who wish to cut down costs and attract more customers. In fact, I remember visiting a second-hand clothes store in the US once and seeing people queueing to shop there. This, however, was not the case at a boutique I visited later that day. Finally, all forms of recycling benefit the environment seeing as fewer resources will be used to manufacture and ship products, and by extension, clothes.

In conclusion, although mandating old clothes recycle will probably not be readily welcomed, its advantages are worth considering.

Some people think that companies and private individuals should pay to clean up the pollution that they produce, not the government

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Industrial pollution has lately been a focal point of modern-day discussions for their alarming nature and scale. In this respect, it has been proposed that one way to address this issue is to make companies and individuals pay for the environmental damage rather than use public funds. Though this suggestion may seem appealing to many, I take issue with this proposal.

To start, there are some valid reasons why companies and individual citizens should be expected to cover expenses associated with the environment. Firstly, companies make large profits at the cost of the environment, so they can afford to pay to curb pollution levels. This, indeed, is a standard practice in some developed nations of the world where powerful companies fund non-profit cleaning organizations that are set up to maintain our natural surroundings. Such practice not only helps restore the environment, but also the government who often struggles to solve other major issues such as poverty and poor education. Finally, if private citizens pay for their pollution, they will become more mindful towards the environment and pollute less.

Nevertheless, I am of the opinion that the government should take full responsibility as far as the environmental issues go. The main reason has to do with the fact that most production companies worldwide pay their share of the pollution costs through taxes. Revenue generated from these taxes is often sufficient and should be seen as reparations paid by giant companies which cause pollution. Similarly, in most countries, citizens already pay taxes to make up for their carbon footprint. Therefore, the suggestion to make people and companies pay even more for pollution is likely to be met with general public disapproval.

In conclusion, while there is some logic to charging companies and private individuals for pollution they cause, I am of the opinion that the government should foot the environmental bill for the reasons stated above.

Some people think that they can go to the gym to remain fit, while others think that there are other better ways to do this.

Discuss both views along with your opinion.

Many people have become more conscious of their physical fitness in recent years, making physical exercise quite an essential part of modern lifestyle. In this regard, some share the view that attending the gym is the proper way to stay in shape while others propose better alternatives. I tend to agree with the former side.

To start, there are certainly many other as effective, if not more, ways to train outside the gym as at the gym. Home workout is the term that has lately grown in popularity among health-conscious communities. This form of workout requires little-to-no equipment and professional supervision, and it has also been proven to be relatively safe in comparison with heavy lifting at fitness centers like the gym. Apart from that, some people, especially seniors, can often be seen doing freestyle physical exercise in park and gardens. To them, little exercise is better than no exercise, and one does not need expensive gear and equipment to give their body exercise it needs.

Despite that, I am of the opinion that physical workout outside the gym pales in comparison with training at the gym. The most obvious advantage here is having a proper setting. Most fitness clubs such as gymnasiums and sports halls are equipped with physical training tools that help maximize physical gains. More to the point, one can burn twice as many calories as they would otherwise as well as targeting the right muscle groups, which is the ultimate goal when training. Adding to this argument is the fact that gyms are more conducive to physical workout; people are more likely to train harder when they are surrounded by physically-fit individuals with defined looks. Finally, there is also a question of injuries. The chance of sustaining physical injuries is minimized if one is accompanied by a qualified training instructor.

In conclusion, though I think physical workout should not be confined to the gym, training at designated places like the gym cannot be substituted as far as efficiency and safety go.
