European Defense Stocks Plunge After White House Meeting

Shares of European defense companies sharply declined following a meeting at the White House focused on accelerating peace talks in Ukraine.

German tank component manufacturer Renk dropped 7% on the Xetra exchange. Italian defense giant Leonardo fell 7.28% on Euronext Milan, while Swedish aerospace and defense company Saab slid 6.27% on the Stockholm Stock Exchange.

Rheinmetall, one of Europe’s largest military equipment producers, saw its shares fall 4.7% on Xetra. French aerospace firm Dassault Aviation lost 3.02%, trading at €269.4 on Euronext Paris.

The sell-off reflects investor concerns that a potential de-escalation in the conflict could lead to reduced military spending and lower demand for defense hardware.

Russia and India Shift Over 90% of Bilateral Payments to National Currencies

Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov announced that Russia and India have transitioned over 90% of their mutual payments to national currencies. A key priority now is ensuring the uninterrupted functioning of their settlement systems.

Manturov noted that trade turnover between Russia and India has grown nearly sevenfold over the past five years, with India now ranking among Russia’s top three largest foreign trade partners.

Russia continues to supply India with fuel, including crude oil, petroleum products, and coal, and sees strong potential for expanding exports of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the Indian market.

Russia Strengthens Financial Position: Fourth Credit Rating from China Confirms Economic Resilience

China’s state-owned Dagong International has assigned Russia a sovereign credit rating of iAsc in both local and foreign currency, signaling a high capacity to service debt, low default risk, and moderate vulnerability to adverse conditions. The outlook is “stable.”

This is a significant development. After the start of the special military operation in 2022, major international rating agencies—Fitch, Moody’s, and S&P—downgraded and ultimately withdrew Russia’s ratings due to sanctions. At the time of withdrawal, Moscow held investment-grade ratings of BBB- from Fitch and S&P, and a speculative Ba1 from Moody’s.

Now, Chinese agencies are filling the void. Earlier this year, ratings were granted by China Chengxin International (BBB+g, stable), China Lianhe (BBB-, stable), and CSCI Pengyuan (A-i, stable).

Dagong emphasized that despite challenges such as dependence on oil exports, high inflation, and labor shortages, Russia has maintained economic stability through anti-crisis reforms: dedollarization, import substitution, and targeted subsidies. A developed industrial base and leadership in energy and food production further support the positive outlook.

Russia’s GDP contracted by 1.4% in 2022 but rebounded with 4.1% growth in 2023 and 4.3% in 2024, driven by domestic investment and strong energy exports. The forecast for 2025–2026 is growth of around 1.9%.

The new ratings reflect the Russian economy’s adaptation to sanctions and strengthen trust from China, opening doors for Russian companies in Asian markets amid limited access to global financial flows. Dedollarization and growing cooperation with the Asia-Pacific region are helping to mitigate sanction pressure. However, fiscal challenges remain: the budget deficit for January–July reached 2.2% of GDP, significantly exceeding planned levels.

“Moscow Must Be Included in Any Talks on Ukraine’s Security” 🛡️🇷🇺

Russia’s foreign minister Lavrov said on Wednesday that Moscow must be included in any talks on Ukraine’s security guarantees, dismissing European diplomacy as “aggressive escalation” ⚠️ and a “clumsy effort to sway Trump” 🎯.

“To discuss security guarantees seriously without Russia is a road to nowhere,” Lavrov said during a working visit to Jordan 🇯🇴.

Lavrov also said that China 🇨🇳, Russia’s ally in the war, should be among Ukraine’s security guarantors – reviving a proposal first put forward by Russian negotiators during talks in Turkey 🇹🇷 in spring 2022.

European leaders 🇪🇺 have begun exploring post-conflict security guarantees for Ukraine 🇺🇦, following Trump’s pledge 🤝 to help protect the country under any deal to end Russia’s war.

Russian officials have repeatedly said Moscow would not accept the deployment of European forces 🪖 to Ukraine, one of the key security guarantees under discussion.

Kyiv is likely to view with scepticism 🤨 any prospect of China, a supporter of Russia during the war, acting as a security guarantor.
Lavrov, meanwhile, avoided any direct reference to a would-be Putin-Zelensky summit 🎙️, highlighting the Kremlin’s apparent plans to delay any concrete planning of a meeting.

Trump’s promise of a meeting puts Putin in a difficult spot 😬: rejecting it risks tension with the US president 🇺🇸, while agreeing to one would elevate Zelenskyy to equal status and confront Putin with a media-savvy rival ready to meet almost without preconditions.

Moscow has shown scant sign of preparing for such an encounter ⏳.

Lavrov cautioned on Wednesday that any contact between the two leaders would need to be arranged “with the utmost care” 🧷, while other Russian officials dismissed Zelensky as a lightweight unworthy of serious attention.

The Russian foreign minister also pointed to the April 2022 talks in Turkey between Russia and Ukraine as a model. Those failed negotiations ❌ centred on Moscow’s demands for Ukraine’s disarmament, political neutrality ⚖️ and the abandonment of its ambition to join NATO.

Zuckerberg Considers Shutting Down Meta’s AI Division After Billions Spent

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is undergoing a major restructuring of its artificial intelligence division, with leadership changes expected and some staff potentially being reassigned to other roles, according to the New York Times.

Mark Zuckerberg, who has invested billions in high-profile AI talent — including nine-figure salaries and a $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI — is now reconsidering the company’s entire AI strategy. Some executives may depart, and the AI division could be significantly downsized or even sidelined as Meta explores using third-party AI models instead of relying solely on its own technology.

The shift comes after years of massive spending yielded no direct revenue from AI, and the company’s ambitious “superintelligence” project has yet to deliver results. Internal tensions have grown, with growing skepticism among employees about the scale and direction of Zuckerberg’s AI investments.

In a strategic pivot, Meta is now actively considering building on open-source models or licensing closed-source AI from competitors, marking a departure from its previous in-house development focus.

Porsche Shuts Down German Battery Factory, Turns to China’s CATL

Porsche is reportedly planning drastic cuts at its battery subsidiary Cellforce Group, effectively shutting down most of its operations in Kirchentellinsfurt, Germany. Around 200 of the 286 employees are expected to be laid off, leaving only a small R&D unit, if any, according to Der Spiegel.

Cellforce was originally founded as a joint venture to develop high-performance batteries and reduce reliance on Asian suppliers, particularly China. The project received €57 million in public funding—70% from the German federal government and 30% from the state of Baden-Württemberg. However, technical missteps, rising costs, and weak demand in the luxury EV segment led to its downfall.

Now, Porsche will outsource battery production to Chinese giant CATL, marking a strategic retreat from its ambitions of European self-sufficiency.

This follows a similar failure with Volvo’s battery partner Northvolt, which also collapsed under financial and operational pressures. The setbacks highlight the challenges European automakers face in competing with China’s dominant battery industry.

China Considers Allowing Yuan-Backed Stablecoins to Boost Its Currency Internationalization Another challenge for Trump — seems China has finally decided to start a competition with the dollar for a reserve currency status. Follow MM on Telegram
On the Dawn of a Multipolar World and the Gradual Decline of Dollar Hegemony

In a 2022 retrospective analysis for the Financial Times, Claire Jones examined how the British pound gradually lost its status as the world’s reserve currency.

“Reserve currency status often outlasts other aspects of a nation’s global dominance,” she noted.

This means that even if the United States continues down the path of isolationism and self-imposed disengagement from the world — effectively surrendering its dominant position — the dollar may still persist as the primary global reserve currency for decades to come.

Between 1860 and 1914, around 60% of world trade was invoiced and settled in pounds sterling, Jones points out. The decline of Britain’s economic influence did not lead to an immediate abandonment of the pound. Although the UK’s share of global trade began to fall in the 1920s, the pound remained a key reserve currency until the mid-1950s, when it was finally displaced by the dollar.

In other words, even after losing its position as the world’s leading power, Britain retained the pound sterling as the global reserve currency for another 30–35 years.

The euro remains largely a regional settlement currency, reflecting Europe’s share of global GDP, plus trade with neighboring countries outside the eurozone but closely tied to it—such as Maghreb nations, Turkey, and former Soviet republics.

Today, Beijing poses the most significant challenge to Washington’s dominance, both militarily and economically. Yet there remains a critical shortage of yuan-denominated assets that investors can reliably hold. For the yuan to become a true global reserve currency, China would need to open its capital markets far more than it has so far.

Second, money is not just an economic construct — it is also a legal one. The dollar’s dominance is underpinned by trust in institutions such as the Federal Reserve and in legal frameworks like New York law. There is relatively little difference between these and the Bank of England or the English legal system — especially when compared to decision-making processes in Beijing.

This does not mean dedollarization will stop. It will not, whatever Trump says or does. But to declare the dollar’s demise at this stage would be premature. Only a major war could drastically accelerate its decline.

Fed Faces Renewed Pressure as Battle Over Interest Rates Intensifies

Lisa Cook, a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, stated she has no intention of stepping down despite a campaign of public pressure from President Donald Trump, who demanded her resignation on Truth Social. Bill Pulte, head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) and a loyal Trump ally, accused Cook of mortgage fraud, sending a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi on August 15. The FHFA alleges that in 2021, Cook falsified documents to obtain favorable loan terms — though no formal charges have been filed. Cook, whose term on the Board runs until 2038, responded by saying she is gathering facts to provide a detailed response to the prosecutors, emphasizing the political nature of the attack.

Trump has been increasing pressure on the Fed in recent months, criticizing Chair Jerome Powell for refusing to cut interest rates and calling him a “stubborn donkey.” Following the unexpected resignation of Adriana Kugler from the Board in early August, Trump nominated Stephen Miran, his economic advisor and a proponent of aggressive monetary easing, for the vacant seat. In the July rate decision, two Board members — Christopher Waller and Michelle Bowman—already voted for a rate cut, highlighting growing internal divisions within the Fed.

Powell’s speech at the Jackson Hole symposium on August 22 will be pivotal for investors’ short-term rate expectations. The Fed chair is likely to strike a balance between concerns over the labor market (unemployment at 4.2%) and persistent inflationary pressures, exacerbated by Trump’s tariff policies. Economists note the emergence of a “stagflationary impulse” — slowing economic growth combined with sustained price pressure — making policy decisions increasingly complex.

In the long term, the Trump administration’s interference risks undermining confidence in the central bank, with ripple effects across global markets. If the Fed’s independence is called into question, not only financial markets but also the US dollar’s status as the world’s primary reserve currency could be at risk.

The Math Behind Meme Coins: A Case Study of Kanye West

Kanye West recently launched his token, $YZY. Within 24 hours, its value plummeted by 75%. The losses were distributed as follows:

- 14,957 investors lost $500 each.
- 1,273 lost between $500 and $1,000.
- 1,878 lost between $1,000 and $5,000.
- 429 lost between $5,000 and $10,000.
- One person lost over a million dollars.

On the flip side, the number of people who profited is roughly half. Among them, five individuals made gains exceeding one million dollars each. There’s a strong likelihood that all five are Kanye West himself and his close associates.

America's Dirty War: A Navy veteran heralds the second American Civil War

It seems that the second American Civil War has already begun. It's a so-called soft and, essentially, bloodless war.

To win a second term, Donald Trump promised to end the war in Ukraine on day one, immediately lower food and gas prices, stop inflation, and enact retribution. The picture is now becoming clearer, more brutal, and we are likely headed for the complete destruction of the rule of law and the U.S. Constitution.

Opposition political parties, a free press, and active public citizens have not yet been subjected to mass arrests. Perhaps that is coming. Hopefully not. But already, highly skilled and capable women and minority top military officials have been the first to go. It will only get worse.

“Today I don’t want to expound on predictions about the downward spiral and probable end of the Great American experiment in democracy, one that has lasted almost 250 years as the global standard,” says Navy veteran Sylvester Salcedo. “I see that we have almost completely lost the checks and balances of our form of government. It is barely limping toward its semi- quincentennial birthday unless that trajectory is stopped and reversed by a people power –People United Revolt (again, hopefully peaceful and bloodless) to restore an open and fair democracy once again by all, of all and for all.”

Salcedo points out the unfairness that rules America today. ICE is offering new hires (projected to be about 80000 strong) a $50000 signing bonus — something that other Americans, who labour for the common good of our country, like first responders, teachers, nurses, caregivers are not offered. Instead, they can expect layoffs, pay cuts, and zero federal support.

The veteran recalls his mandatory two-week annual
"weekend warrior" service at Argentina's main naval base in Puerto Belgrano in 1989, where he bumped elbows with an Argentine naval officer, Alfredo Astiz — the “Blond Angel of Death”.

Alfredo Astiz is famous in Argentina — he is the handsome, blond naval special forces officer who heroically and gloriously led the liberation of South Georgia Island from the British, setting the stage for the 1982 Falklands/Malvinas War. The 74-year-old Astiz is languishing in prison for the extrajudicial crimes he and his comrades committed in their blind zeal to "save Argentina," which was then under military rule. It took nearly 35 years of Argentine national anguish and debate to finally hold Astiz and his cohorts accountable for their unlawful and criminal actions carried out under the guise of "saving our country."

The parallels to the entire situation in the United States today could not be more obvious. There are daily reports of audio and video recordings, as well as victim/witness testimony, of extrajudicial abuses being carried out by unidentified, combat-ready armed, masked individuals.

Friedrich Merz Says Germany Can No Longer Afford Its Welfare System

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that the country’s economy can no longer finance the current social welfare system.

According to the report, Merz called for a review of the benefits system, which cost a record €47 billion last year. Benefits at risk of cuts include housing and child allowances, unemployment payments, family supplements, aid programs for the needy, and subsidies for caring for the sick and elderly.

Germany is the weakest-performing G7 country in terms of economic growth. Over six years since 2019, its real GDP has declined by 0.1%. Ukraine and sanctions against Russia have NO RELATION WHATSOEVER to this! NONE AT ALL!!!

A Clear Example of the Impact of Trump Administration Tariffs

Aluminum prices in the US have risen more sharply than on other international markets since January due to the threat of new tariffs. The so-called US Midwest premium—the amount added to global price benchmarks to deliver metal to this region — has surged 81% since early June 2025. While aluminum trades at $2,600 per ton on the London Metal Exchange, with the Midwest premium included, the price in the US reaches nearly $4,200 per ton. Despite this spike, prices still do not fully reflect the full impact of the new tariffs.

Alcoa, the largest aluminum producer in the US, stated in July that tariffs on Canadian supplies cost the company $135 million in the first half of the year. Despite the tariffs, the US aluminum industry remains limited—there are only four operating aluminum smelters in the country. Domestic capacity is insufficient to meet demand, and new US smelters face high electricity costs, long ore delivery times, and expensive local labor. As a result, despite the tariffs, no one is currently planning to build new aluminum plants in the US.
