RT @Charles_Lister: From al-Hol, we drove to #Hasakeh, where we toured throughout Ghweiran Prison – made notorious by a major #ISIS attack in Jan ‘22 that sparked an 8-day battle that drew in US/UK SOF & left 500+ dead. Scars from that battle were everywhere -- so too were added defenses (no pics).

RT @Charles_Lister: Ghweiran Prison is the largest of 26 #SDF-run detention facilities holding 10,000 #ISIS prisoners in NE #Syria. Ghweiran holds ~5,000 men, all of whom came out of al-Baghouz, #ISIS’s last territorial holdout in March 2019. They’re considered to be the worst of the worst.

RT @Charles_Lister: Ghweiran Prison’s security chief said an #ISIS attack plot had recently been foiled, involving operatives inside & outside the facility. One Iraqi ‘emir’ inside was mapping out the entire prison facility, using a bedsheet and ground chicken bones (pens & paper are banned).

RT @Charles_Lister: While departing Ghweiran en route for the #SDF’s headquarters nearby, a U.S. medevac helicopter arrived carrying an #SDF member shot in an #ISIS attack just minutes earlier in Deir ez Zour – another reminder of the terror group’s ongoing, deadly insurgency. https://t.co/m9mHItGMws

RT @Charles_Lister: With a light footprint, the US has played an invaluable role in degrading ISIS in northeast #Syria & those efforts continue apace. Multiple #ISIS senior commanders have been killed in recent months. Across the line in the regime-held desert meanwhile, #ISIS is on the offense.

RT @Charles_Lister: But beyond the military fight, the biggest challenge is dealing with the 10,000 #ISIS men & 51,000 women & children held in prisons & camps across NE #Syria. Local returns (to #Iraq & in #Syria) & foreign repatriation is vital – but inordinately complex & scale unprecedented.
— FJ (@Natsecjeff) Mar 11, 2023
RT @Charles_Lister: According to @CENTCOM, 30,000 #ISIS male fighters are in detention now in #Syria & #Iraq – ‘an army in waiting,’ always vulnerable to prison breaks, particularly in #Syria. Without repatriation, @CENTCOM now worries the 25,000 children in al-Hol are #ISIS’s “next generation.”

RT @Charles_Lister: After seeing the whole scope of the problem, one thing is clear: the U.S. military presence in NE #Syria remains **critically** important – without it, we’ll be repeating our 2011 #Iraq withdrawal all over again. That saw #ISIS surge across borders like never before.

RT @Minalami: So #Ramadan came and went and #ISIS didn’t launch a militant campaign, as it had done during some Ramadans, nor issued a leadership message or its trademark propaganda images that depict “the daily lives” of militants during the holy month /1

RT @jseldin: NEW: @CJTFOIR seeing "dramatic decrease" in #ISIS activity, per Commander MajGen Matthew McFarlane - 68% reduction in attacks in #Iraq (year on year) - 55% reduction in attacks in #Syria (year on year) But he warns, "The #Daesh ideology remains unconstrained & active"

RT @SAMRIReports: 150 threat warnings have been received from January 2022 to April 2023 out of which 78 were averted. Former #ISIS and [#IRGC-backed] Zainebiyoun militants returning from #Syria /#Yemen / Middle East to #Pakistan including Punjab, pose a security risk. https://t.co/xQ48trdrwf https://t.co/lcCXzMEXvP

RT @jseldin: #Pakistan counterterror ops "are stern & unforgiving even as we would use modicum of political capital w/#Afghan #Taliban to deny space to TTP & #ISIS-K on their soil" per #Pakistan Amb Shah

"The #UnitedStates too is talking directly to Taliban cabinet ministers..."

RT @HussamHamoud: 1. Exclusive information indicates that #ISIS leader who was neutralized by #Turkey on April 29th, known as Abu Hussein al-Qurashi, the 4th leader of ISIS, was stripped of the caliphate role about a month before his death, following to ISIS’s Shura Council decision. https://t.co/5P7GHzv1Eb

RT @HussamHamoud: 2. The dismissal came due to internal conflict with other high-ranked leaders in #ISIS over the military mechanism, as he was inciting operations targeting #SDF prisons in NE #Syria, which hold ISIS fighters, while the other leaders opposed such a step, describing it as reckless.

RT @HussamHamoud: 3. Wherefore, a new leader has been appointed even before the death of Abu Hussein al-Qurashi. It is likely that the new leader is Iraqi too, and #ISIS won’t announced about him soon. He will be stationed in the Syrian Badia or the Anbar desert in #Iraq.
