Why is an equilateral triangular diagram used to represent equilibrium for extraction systems in mass transfer operations?

The equilateral triangular diagram, also known as the ternary phase diagram, is commonly used to represent equilibrium for extraction systems in mass transfer operations because it provides a visual representation of the distribution of components between two immiscible phases. In an extraction system, a solute is transferred from one phase (usually a liquid phase) to another phase (often a solvent phase) in order to separate or purify the components.

Because of the property of the constant sum of perpendiculars. This property is a geometric characteristic of equilateral triangles and is particularly useful in ternary phase diagrams for extraction systems.

When a perpendicular is drawn from a point within the triangle to each of the three sides, the lengths of these perpendiculars represent the relative proportions or concentrations of the three components in the system. The sum of these perpendiculars remains constant because of the geometric properties of the equilateral triangle. This means that regardless of where the point is located within the triangle, the sum of the lengths of the perpendiculars will always be the same.

Similarly, the sum of mole fractions of the three components in a ternary system is also constant and equals 1. This is because in a ternary system, the total composition must add up to 100% or 1 in terms of mole fractions. Therefore, if you consider any point within the equilateral triangle representing a ternary system, the mole fractions of the three components at that point will always add up to 1.

By utilizing these geometric and compositional relationships, engineers can effectively determine the equilibrium compositions, optimize operating conditions, and ensure efficient separation and extraction processes in various applications within chemical engineering and other related fields.

The equilateral triangular diagram is particularly useful for representing three-component systems, where the relative concentrations of the components in each phase can be easily visualized. The vertices of the triangle represent the pure components, and the lines connecting the vertices represent the binary mixtures of the components. The area inside the triangle represents all possible compositions of the three components at equilibrium.

This diagram provides a comprehensive overview of the system and helps in designing and optimizing extraction processes for various applications in chemical engineering and other industries.

While the property of constant sum of perpendiculars is unique to equilateral triangles, in some case for extraction systems. Other types of triangles, such as right triangles or isosceles triangles, can also be employed.

Equilateral triangles are commonly used due to their symmetrical properties and the constant sum of perpendiculars, which simplifies calculations and analysis.
Right angle triangles can be used when one component is fixed at 100% and the other two components vary in proportion.
Isosceles triangles may be used when two components have equal proportions, and the third component varies.

In practice, engineers and researchers may choose different triangle shapes based on the specific characteristics of the extraction system, the phase behavior of the components, and the objectives of the analysis.

Therefore, while equilateral triangles have distinct properties that make them commonly (can be used in all cases) used in ternary phase diagrams, other triangle shapes can also be employed (only in some special cases) effectively in extraction systems depending on the requirements of the application.

What is the effect of temperature on the liquid liquid solubility?

In general, the solubility of liquids in each other tends to increase with temperature. Increasing temperature usually increases the kinetic energy of the molecules, allowing them to overcome intermolecular forces and mix more easily.

However, there are exceptions to this general trend, and the behavior of specific liquid-liquid systems may vary.

The solubility of liquids in each other tends to increase with temperature for nonpolar liquids, while for polar liquids, the solubility may decrease with temperature.

One notable exception to the general trend of increasing solubility with temperature for nonpolar liquids is the system of water and organic solvents. Water is a polar solvent, while many organic solvents are nonpolar. In this case, the solubility of organic solvents in water typically decreases as temperature increases. This is because the increase in temperature disrupts the hydrogen bonding network in water, making it less favorable for nonpolar molecules to dissolve.

Another exception is the system of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) and acetone. These two liquids have similar molecular structures and are both nonpolar. However, the solubility of acetone in carbon tetrachloride decreases with increasing temperature. This is due to the fact that acetone molecules are more likely to escape the solvent as temperature rises, leading to a decrease in solubility.

It's important to note that the behavior of liquid-liquid systems can be complex and may not always follow a simple trend. Factors such as molecular interactions, polarity, and specific intermolecular forces can all influence solubility, making it important to consider the unique characteristics of each system when studying their behavior with temperature changes.

In case of type 2 system, sometimes it can happen that by increase in temperature, the miscibility of the solvent increases with the solute but at the same time, it decreases with the carrier liquid. This situation is very favourable for us as in this case when type II system converts to type I system, the region in the equilibrium curve is very huge and wide range of separation can be achieved.

Reverse can also happen but that would not be favourable.

Our aim is to find a solvent whose miscibility increases with solute and decreases with carrier liquid. If possible then its the best scenario but otherwise in general, solvent miscibility with both solute and carrier liquid increases with increase in temperature.

What do we mean by Plait point in the case of liquid liquid extraction?

In the context of liquid-liquid extraction, the plait point refers to the point at which the two immiscible liquid phases (raffinate and extract) in a system reach a state of equilibrium and becomes one. It means no difference can be drawn between the two phases and the composition of both raffinate phase and extract phase becomes same.
At this point, the distribution of a solute between the two phases is constant, meaning that the solute is evenly distributed between the two phases and no further extraction will occur.

When the plait point is reached in a liquid-liquid extraction system, several factors and driving forces undergo changes:

1. Density difference: As the plait point is reached, the density difference between the two immiscible liquid phases becomes less significant. This is because the solute has been distributed evenly between the phases. At the plait point, density difference becomes zero.

2. Interfacial tension: The interfacial tension between the two phases decreases as the plait point is reached. This is due to the fact that the solute molecules have effectively partitioned between the two phases, leading to a reduction in the energy required to maintain the interface between them. At the plait point, Interfacial tension becomes zero.

3. Other factors: Other factors such as mass transfer rates, diffusion, and partition coefficients also become less influential as the plait point is reached.
Selectivity value becomes 1 at the plait point and no separation can occur.

Strategy to crack the PSU written exams
NFL, RCFL and HPCL written exams

1. Revise your notes that you must have prepared for the GATE exam
2. Go through smallest detail and concepts because there will be many one liners question in the exam
3. In case if some topics or subjects are weak then go through the textbooks or the lectures to prepare them
4. Now practice the questions of the gate previous years specially one mark questions and simple numericals of 2 marks. No need to go through big numerical questions of 2 marks.
5. Now your task is to practice the questions which I am sharing on the daily basis
6. As I'm sharing 30 questions everyday, there will be a total of 1800 questions in the span of 2 months which will be 4 to 5 times the questions provided by many coaching institutes through test series.
7. Just practice these questions again and again because based on these questions only there will be questions in the written exams.
8. When the exam date declare, I will also arrange these questions in form of a test series which will be provided to you for free you can practice that in order to practice for the real exam.
9. Now coming to the non technical portion. To prepare the non technical portion, first of all go through the general aptitude part that you must have prepared for the GATE exam. In case you have not prepared then there are many free playlist available on the YouTube or you can also watch the general aptitude lectures in unacademy Plus through the account of any of the subscriber.
10. After preparing the general aptitude part as per the gate now your task is to solve the previous years questions of the CGL level. Genelie the questions in these exams comes directly from the previous years questions of SSC CGL. Therefore purchase a book of the previous years questions of SSC CGL and practice the various parts from that book. Those questions are quality questions and it will help you to prepare aptitude verbal nonverbal logical reasoning general science and general knowledge part.
11. Initially give 75% of your days time to the technical part and 25% of your days time to non technical part. After one month change this ratio in 60 : 40 and after 2 months change this ratio to 50 : 50.
12. This is because the first task is to prepare for the technical part and then slowly and steadily we will be preparing ourselves for the non technical part also.
