During an interview with the commercial radio ZET, Mr Piontkowski was asked when pupils would return to school from distance learning. He indicated that everything would depend on the development of the pandemic.

He also expressed his hope that the schools would be reopened in April, and at the latest in May or June.

"All specialists say that in most cases distance learning is not as good as a full-time one, but a lot depends on individual predispositions," Mr Piontkowski said.

Pursuant to the ordinance of the Minister of Education and Science, full-time education in schools and most other educational institutions is suspended until April 11.

He added that accelerating the vaccination process is important in the fight against the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland.

"We especially want to speed up the vaccination of people aged 60 or older," Mr Dworczyk stressed, adding that the government would like them to be vaccinated until the end of April.

"We urge vaccination points ... to move... [vaccination of] patients aged 60 or older from May to April," he emphasised and added that such appeal was passed on to the points.

COVID-19: Poland extends lockdown restrictions until April 18

"The epidemic restrictions currently in force will be extended until April 18," Poland’s Health minister Adam Niedzielski announced at a press conference on Wednesday. He pointed out that further decisions will be made next week, when it will be possible to estimate whether the third wave of the pandemic in Poland is actually slowing down.

COVID-19: Poland extends lockdown restrictions until April 18 "The epidemic restrictions currently in force will be extended until April 18," Poland’s Health minister Adam Niedzielski announced at a press conference on Wednesday. He pointed out that further…
Mr Niedzielski emphasised that the epidemic situation should be closely monitored especially after the Easter holiday period.

"For these reasons, we have decided that the restrictions that are currently in force will be extended for another period of more than a week... We want this period… [to last] until April 18 and then next week we will make another decision what to do next," said the Head of the Ministry of Health.

The decision was postponed for a week, he stressed, as the government is looking at whether the downward trend in the number of new daily cases will continue.

"But most of all, we want to see what the consequences of the [third] wave of infections will look like with regard to hospital infrastructure," Mr Niedzielski pointed out.

Currently, nationwide restrictions include the closure of furniture and DIY stores, hairdressers and beauty salons, kindergartens and creches (with the exception of childcare for the children of medical staff, social workers and law enforcement, among others).

New limits have also been imposed on shops and places of worship. A limit of one person per 15 square metres (sqm) applies to shops of up to 100 square metres, with the space requirement increasing to one customer per 20 square metres in stores of over 100 square metres. The limit in places of worship is one person per 20 square metres.

Shopping centres remain closed except for grocery stores and pharmacies, as do hotels with the exception of hotels for workers and medical staff. Gyms, fitness clubs, cinemas, museums, theatres and entertainment venues are also closed. Restaurants are only permitted to provide a takeaway service.

The wearing of face masks in public is mandatory nationwide, as is maintaining a 1.5-metre distance from other people.

Mr Niedzielski also said on Wednesday that the so-called British variant of SARS-CoV-2 is now dominant in Poland, accounting for 90 percent of all cases. There are also individual incidences of infection with the South African and Brazilian strains of the virus.

Piotr Piwowarczyk, the Head of the Świnoujście Tourist Organisation, announced on Sunday that the world’s largest national flag has been hoisted in the city to celebrate Polish Flag Day.

He stated that strong wind is the biggest problem when hoisting a flag of that size but that weather conditions were fortunately good during the procedure.

The flag hoisted on the lighthouse measures 640 square meters and thus we managed to break the Guinness record for the size of the flag flying in the national colors, Piwowarczyk stated.

"He is a well-deserved figure, a soldier of the Republic of Poland and at the same time a boy from here, who was born here, near Koźle, in a small town, in a very Silesian and at the same time Polish family”, emphasised the president. He recalled that Alfons Zgrzebniok, "in order to be able to attend a German gymnasium, he had to learn German in addition, because he simply did not speak this language at home".

"He was brought up in Poland, in Polishness, in Silesia, and he fought unwaveringly for Poland in all three uprisings. His award with the Order of the White Eagle, the highest Polish award, is, on the one hand, respect for his heroism, his extraordinary attitude and his great merits for his deed. On the other hand, just as I awarded the commanders of the Greater Poland Uprising, this important commander of the Silesian uprisings will also receive this Order of the White Eagle," said Andrzej Duda. "This uprising was so important for Poland and Poles, because it was a victorious uprising," he evaluated, adding that it was one of the few victorious uprisings in Polish history after the Greater Poland Uprising. He also assessed that the Silesian Uprising "determined that a large part of Upper Silesia, industrialised Upper Silesia, an important part, of extraordinary economic and economic value, found itself within the borders of the Second Polish Republic".
