How to find (tech) jobs that don't get posted on job boards?

Typically, companies advertise just a few of their jobs – either the hottest or hard-to-fill positions. To find those that remain unadvertised on job platforms, you can use good old Google and Boolean search operators.

Let us explain.

Nowadays, employers are actively using applicant tracking systems (ATS) to capture resumes for their job openings. An ATS is a sort of a CRM for recruiters.

Popular ones include:

- Greenhouse (https://boards.greenhouse.io)
- Workable (https://apply.workable.com)
- Lever (https://jobs.lever.co)
- SmartRecruiters (https://jobs.smartrecruiters.com)
- Jobvite (https://jobs.jobvite.com)

Many job ads are duplicated on the websites of applicant tracking systems. Moreover, this content is googleable, and that's when Boolean search operators come in very handy.

To help you get started, try these how-to steps:

1️⃣ In the Google search box, type site: followed by the web address of any ATS mentioned in this post.

2️⃣ Add search terms (relevant tech keywords) to find what you're looking for.

3️⃣ You can add locations or other details (visa sponsorship, relocation, remote, etc.) to help filter out what you're not searching for.

4️⃣ Use Boolean operators AND, OR, and NOT to connect and define the relationship between your search terms. For instance, "python AND flask" will produce results (job openings) that contain both keywords while "java OR scala" will retrieve results that have either keyword. OR is best used for synonyms (e.g., developer OR engineer).

5️⃣ Use parentheses () to group similar or related terms together.

Pro-tip: Filter search results by date to see the most recent job opening. You can do so in the "Tools" tab, located next to the search box.

Practical examples:

site:https://apply.workable.com (frontend OR front end OR front-end) AND react AND (visa sponsorship OR visa support OR relocation)

This Boolean search string can be used to find React jobs with visa sponsorship/relocation assistance available. As proof, below are some of the relevant vacancies that emerged when we typed it into the Google search box:

- Frontend Software Engineer @ Spark Networks in Berlin 🇩🇪
- Software Engineer, Frontend @ SmartNews in Tokyo 🇯🇵
- Sr. Frontend Engineer @ Smallpdf in Zurich 🇨🇭
- Senior Software Engineer (Frontend) @ iPrice Group in Kuala Lumpur 🇲🇾

Not bad, is it?

--------

site:https://jobs.lever.co (developer OR engineer) AND (java OR golang OR go) AND (visa sponsorship OR visa support OR relocation)

The above is an example of a search string for finding Java/Golang jobs that offer relocation. Here are the results generated:

- Backend Engineer @ Qonto in Paris 🇫🇷
- Sr. Software Engineer @ Canva in Sydney 🇦🇺
- (Senior) Go Backend Developer @ Applike Group in Hamburg 🇩🇪

--------

site:https://boards.greenhouse.io (developer OR engineer) AND python AND (berlin OR munich OR amsterdam OR london OR paris OR tallinn) AND (relocation OR visa sponsorship OR visa support)

This Boolean search string works well for finding Python jobs that offer relocation to popular European cities. Here are some of the relevant vacancies from the search results page:

- Python Engineer @ e-bot7 in Munich 🇩🇪
- Senior Software Engineer (Data) @ Wayve in London 🇬🇧
- Engineering Manager @ Gnosis in Berlin 🇩🇪
- Software Engineer @ Seldon in London 🇬🇧
- Data Engineer @ Solsten in Berlin 🇩🇪

You can easily adjust this query string to suit your skillset and location preferences. Just remember that AND narrows your search. The more specific you are, the fewer results Google will retrieve. Also, be aware that boolean searches are not case-sensitive.

This approach to your job seach can be time-consuming, and you will find some jobs that are not quite what you are looking for or are no longer active, but if you're are desperate to find that dream role, it's worth trying.

Have a great weekend!

Do you remember our post about finding unadvertised yet very alive jobs by using Boolean logic on Google?

We have a small addition:

It is also possible to source international job opportunities from Personio and Recruitee applicant tracking systems.

Here's how:

site:recruitee.com (developer OR engineer) AND (relocation support OR relocation assistance OR relocation package OR visa)

Typing the above into the Google search box will give you a shortlist of companies that are using Recruitee as their ATS and, more important, have job listings or Jobs page with keywords "relocation" and/or "visa."

So, you might find some new potential employers and relevant job openings that offer visa/relocation assistance. As proof, below are some of the relevant results generated:

"If you have the same open mindset as we have, no matter where you come from, Gerimedica might be your employer. And if you need relocation for that, we are happy to support you!"

"Do you offer a relocation package and visa sponsorship?

Yes and yes."

- Senior Product Engineer (Frontend) @ Browse AI

"Why join Browse AI:

You live where you are comfortable living; We hire remotely and globally.

If you live outside Vancouver or Canada, you can be offered a relocation package after 3-12 months to move to Vancouver."

------

site:jobs.personio.de (developer OR engineer) AND (relocation support OR relocation assistance OR relocation package OR visa)

This Boolean search string will give you a shortlist of companies that are using Personio as their ATS and have job listings with keywords "relocation" and/or "visa." Here are some of the relevant results generated:

- Staff Backend Engineer @ JUCR in Berlin

"WHY US?

• 28 vacation days
• Visa/relocation support from all around the world
✈️
• ..."

- Senior Backend Engineer @ Journi in Vienna

"We wouldn’t be able to do what we are doing without our team and that’s why we offer:

• Relocation and visa support for non-EU citizens: ONLY with a finished Computer Science degree
• ..."

- Unity Game Engineer @ Etermax in Berlin

"WHAT WE HAVE TO OFFER

• Support with relocation and visa
• ..."

That's it for today. Stay tuned for more tips and job opps!
