Text description provided by the architects. The old college of Foix is a building listed in the supplemen-tary inventory and classified as a Historic Monument with its keep dating from 1457.
In line with the respect of the existing architecture, an important reflection was carried out with the ABF in order to propose a modern architectural language in coherence with the old building. The fa-cade is clad with gold-coloured interlocking copper sheets.
The building blends in perfectly with its immediate surroundings and contributes to embellishing the urban space.
----------
In the historic heart of Toulouse, in the immediate vicinity of the Place du Capitole, the former Collège de Foix is a building both listed in the supplementary inventory of historical monuments and whose 1457 keep is classified as a historic monument. Managed by the Sisters of the Congregation Notre-Dame de la Compassion, it hosts several entities including a student residence and an EHPAD - the project to add an EHPAA is therefore in the continuity of the destination of the place. This R + 3 exten-sion coming to "close" a courtyard, the LETELLIER Architectes agency seized the opportunity to treat it as a second main courtyard, creating a parallel to the adjoining cloister. In line with respect for pre-existing classical architecture, an important reflection was carried out with the Architect of the Build-ings of France in order to propose an architectural language at the same time modern and coherent with the old buildings. The initial idea was to create a facade reminiscent of the surface of the water, with its reflections, its movements and its softness, a metaphor for a peaceful, calm life. The four lev-els are thus covered with interlocking copper sheets of golden color, and pierced with random open-ings. The building is treated as a real architectural object, which marks a new stage in the continuity of urban development. Copper, a coherent choice of material in a historic place by its traditional character, here plays the role of an epidermis. It offers spectacular light effects, of great finesse and elegance, creating a kind of mirror that dematerializes to give pride of place to the original build-ings. The sobriety of the treatment of the facings, joinery and shutters has been considered in order to accentuate this effect. The new building, with its volume and its noble materials, fits perfectly into its immediate surroundings and contributes to embellishing an urban space which was until then "unfinished".
