The Old Church of Vilanova de la Barca
The Old Church of Vilanova de la Barca (Lleida, Spain) is a 13th-century Gothic building that was partially demolished in 1936 because of the bombings of Spanish Civil War. Since then, the church was in a general state of ruin preserving just its apse, some fragments of the naves and the western façade. The main aim of the project was the restoration of the original appearance of the church and its transformation in a new multi-purpose hall. The most important part of this intervention has focused on the covering elements. The project establishes a new brick façade based on a latticework texture and a new gabled Arab tile roof. The whole system is conceived as a new architectural ceramic shell that is gently supported on the remains of the ancient walls. From outside, the perception of the old church is restored, meanwhile inside the building, the project intensifies the entrance of natural light due to the new windows, the new proposed patio or thanks to the white rendering walls that have been introduced. Thus, the project establishes an architectural dialogue between the old and the new, past and present.

Born in 1841 in the Vendée, a coastal department of western France, Georges Clemenceau was a politician and journalist – a dominant figure in the French Third Republic and, as prime minister – a major contributor to the Allied victory in World War I.
Today, his native house in Mouilleron-en-Pareds is transformed into a museum, pulling his private world and public life into the public realm. The project emerged from its location, with respect to its historical structure. Designed to give the opportunity to begin a new narrative, the building seeks to uncover both its original and current purpose. The concept proposes contemporary interventions with minimum visual compromise to the building’s original appearance. From one perspective, the architecture follows, both in compositional and museological terms, the traditional, domestic character of a house. Its essence and rustic materials are preserved, leaving ample space for the museography, designed with scenographers Le Bureau Baroque.
The new elements are interwoven into the visitor’s path to activate a unique experience, following the rhythm of the existing architecture. To create a link with the community, the adjacent barn is reconstructed to add new programmatic opportunities for concerts, screenings and exhibitions. The museum reveals a new perspective on how art and architecture would benefit from each other’s challenges, unveiling the real substance of the building to its visitors, and, through its informal learning opportunities, giving a new vantage point on history and present times. The visit is elaborated, involving all senses to create a real interaction between content, scenography and visitor. An interactive website on the internet, a combination of graphics and multimedia invite the visitor to experience the museum, creating a new public route through the building and exposition.
