The building is essentially a cover protecting the remains of a Roman assembly (thermal baths, forum and domus) in the archaeological site of Molinete Park in Cartagena, Spain. This cover is certainly another piece in the historic area of Cartagena whose main architectural challenge is to reconcile very different architectures; from the roman time, passing through baroque to nowadays, making all the interventions vibrate together in the neighborhood. It is a transition element, between very diverse urban conditions: in size, material and structure; from the dense city centre to the sloping park. The primary goal of the work is to respect the existing remains, using a long-span structure, which requires the least amount of support for lifting the cover. The intervention unifies all the remains in a single space, allowing a continuous perception of the whole site. The cover also generates a new urban facade in the partition wall. The project also pursues a sense of lightness and is conceived as an element that allows light inside. The inner layer is built with a modular system of corrugated multiwall translucent polycarbonate sheets. The outer layer, constructed with perforated steel plates, qualifies the incidence of light and gives a uniform exterior appearance. Besides to the steel structure, the building set includes an elevated walkway parallel to the street, that is accessible – like all the built tours - for disabled visitors. It is a very light structure hanging from steel beams. Conceived as a glass box, with a faceted, partially visible geometry, it makes up the street façade and allows a view of the ruins from three meters high as this high path set out an overall vision of the roman remains.

Art Shield - a new way of statue conservation
Our creative team designed and built a contemporary installation to protect one of Budapest’s most famous monuments from the frigid winters. Breaking the habit of covering the sculpture with a plastic sheet, a functional yet artistic pavilion came to life at the renewed Vörösmarty Square, located in the heart of the city. The Art Shield protects and highlights the monument at the same time, showing a new way of statue conservation. Although this is our first design that is mostly steel, it fits well with our previous works. During the design phase, we did not only focus on quality, but also on ensuring that the installation can be assembled and dismantled swiftly, and that it is also easy to transport and store. It’s important that the example of the spectacular conservational structure should be followed, therefore, we plan to deliver similar projects in the future.

Functional yet artistic
Our studio has approached the winterization of the monument in Vörösmarty tér from a fresh angle. One of the most frequented squares of Budapest has just emerged refreshed from renovation works, and the monument commemorating the rouser of the nation now also stands renewed. We have created a unique temporary space around the artwork, protecting it from the damaging effect of winter’s frost and thaw. Functionality served as our excuse to twist all ideas of statue conservation and crown the monument with 10-metre-tall steel pavilion of sacral overtones. The statue, now on display again in the winter season as well, and the pavilion together form the new gem of Vörösmarty tér and the Christmas Fair setting the example for other public spaces in Europe.
One of Budapest’s foremost attractions is the annual Advent and Christmas Fair in Vörösmarty tér and right in the middle of it stands the Vörösmarty monument. Having been carved from Carrara marble, this artwork is susceptible to damage by moisture and frost. The temporary installation will be dismantled at the end of the season; its elements can be reassembled in the square again next winter. The huge, arched structure owes its airy quality to its weatherproof steel sheets, while the transparent plexiglass facade protects it from the driving rain.

This volume gives the character that the archaeological park demands, an absolute re-spect for the ancient work and a contemporary architecture that accompanies it to make it better. The result is a happy hybridization, A modern architecture justified by the ancient remains and at the same time some remains that grow in a brave and optimistic way with the architecture of the present.
Again, memory and contemporary cultural context.
