The exceptional re-development of the Grade A listed, former General Post Office Building provides 131,000ft2
of luxury office space across nine floors, in George Square, Glasgow's cultural and commercial heart.
A dramatic triple height feature entrance leads to the sophisticated entrance hall, designed in Bavarian limestone. From here, six high speed lifts give access to nine office floors, providing flexible open plan office space.
Much of the beauty of the building is in the attention to detail, from maximising natural daylight on all elevations to providing
bright, spacious and efficient workspace. External roof terraces on floors six to nine provide a unique view over Glasgow City Centre and offer a stunning backdrop to occupiers.
Taking inspiration from Victorian railway architecture, the glass and metal domed roof re-invents a rich history of grand Victorian
terminus and glass house buildings. The design creates a dramatic statement that harmoniously fuses both contemporary and Victorian architectural styles.
This major facade retention and demolition project to a grade I listed building – The former Post Office building central, challenged our Technical Team to deliver a variety of complex temporary works solutions to meet the clients demanding programme.
The six storey building adjoins another building which provides accommodation for Scotland’s leading Barristers, Consultants and high flying Executives. The three remaining sides of the building are all retained using external structural steelwork.
This in itself presented major challenges with regard to access, traffic and pedestrian management.
Our scope included:
• Service disconnections
• Condition surveys
• Piling and temporary works design
• Traffic management diversion and road closures
• Forming a 5 x 5m opening in the listed facade
• Piling & pile caps
• External steelworks
• Internal demolition / deconstructions
• High spec hoarding and temporary lighting
This facade retention and demolition project required total commitment from our Management Team along with the total support from our partnered sub-contractors and Consultants to deliver a project with such constraints, given two weeks to mobilise and 26 weeks on site remain a challenge to our company.
