UN & Bill Gates Launch “50in5” Global Digital Infrastructure Plans

Last week the UN Dev Program officially launched their new initiative promoting “Digital Public Infrastructure” (DPI) around the world.

The “50in5” program – so-called because it aims to introduce DPI in fifty countries in the next five years – began with a live-streamed event on November 8th.

For those of you unsure what “Digital Public Infrastructure” is, the 50in5 website is quite clear:
Digital public infrastructure (DPI) – which refers to a secure and interoperable network of components that include digital payments, ID, & data exchange systems.

There’s nothing new there, for anyone who has been paying even the slightest bit of attention. Digital ID and digital payment systems are self-explanatory (and we’ve covered them before). “Data Exchange Systems” essentially means national governments will share identity and financial records of citizens across borders with other nations, or indeed with global governmt agencies.

Israel Orders Residents From Southern Gaza Towns, Raising Fear of War’s Spread

Israel ordered civilians to leave four towns in the southern part of the Gaza Strip on Thursday, raising fears its war against Hamas could spread to areas it had told people were safe.

In the north of the Hamas-ruled Palestinian enclave, Israel said its forces were still present at Gaza's biggest hospital, Al Shifa, but gave no further details of their operations since the previous day when they entered the facility culminating a days-long siege.

Reuters was unable to verify the situation at Shifa on Thursday morning, having lost contact with doctors inside it since Wednesday.

Leaflets dropped overnight from aircraft told civilians to leave the towns of Bani Shuhaila, Khuzaa, Abassan and Qarara, on the eastern edge of Khan Younis, the main southern city. The towns, collectively home to more than 100,000 people in peacetime, are now sheltering tens of thousands more who fled other areas.

Israel-Palestine war: How Meta is once again failing Palestinians - Nadim Nashif

"Last month, Meta disabled the Facebook page of Quds News Network, a prominent Palestinian outlet with around 10 million followers, along with a number of other Palestinian media pages. The state of Israel, which routinely pressures social media companies in an effort to control the narrative, quickly took to X (formerly Twitter) to post a seemingly inconspicuous “thank you”.

The Palestinian flag emoji, for instance, has been flagged as “potentially offensive” by Instagram, resulting in it being hidden. Another “technical error” encountered by Palestinian users on Facebook and Instagram prevented the display of images of Palestinian victims in hospitals, because they were deemed to be “nude” pictures.

Among the most significant and disturbing examples was Meta’s inexplicable mistranslation of innocuous Arabic phrases in the bios of some Palestinian Instagram users to add the word “terrorist”. The company later attributed this to an interpretive error."

Meta Instagram users accuse platform of censoring posts supporting Palestine - Kari Paul

"Meta made similar excuses in May 2021, during a separate series of escalations in Palestine during which Facebook and Instagram users posting about Palestine reported a similar reduction in the reach of their posts. Those incidents prompted a letter signed by more than 200 Meta employees demanding the company address such shortcomings. A subsequent independent analysis commissioned by Meta found that the social networks had violated Palestinian human rights by censoring content related to Israel’s attacks on Gaza."

In addition to allegations of shadow banning and outright censorship, Meta was under fire this week after users documented a glitch that translated “Palestinian” followed by the Arabic phrase “Praise be to Allah” to “Palestinian terrorists” in multiple profiles. A former Facebook employee with access to discussions among current Meta employees said the issue “really pushed a lot of people over the edge” – internally and externally.

“You cannot keep blaming it on glitches when it’s spreading misinformation and dehumanizing Palestinians by feeding into the narrative that all Palestinians are terrorists,” said the former employee, who spoke anonymously for fear of retaliation. “It’s very overwhelming for a lot of the employees of the company.”
