Vietnam’s North-South railway has remained much the same since it was first built 85 years ago, with the iconic line highlighting the halting nature of Vietnamese infrastructure projects as plans to modernise have gone without progress for more than a decade. Today, the pandemic is bringing Vietnam’s already fragile rail industry to its knees, reports the Globe’s Govi Snell in Saigon.

Vietnam’s first metro finally rolled into action this November, following a decade of delays and rising costs that have prevented the project from arriving on schedule. Globe’s Govi Snell takes us on a journey of urban development, transport and city infrastructure that highlights the issues of budget inefficiency, public service and international funding that lie under the surface of this underground infrastructure initiative.

Road accidents are among Cambodia’s biggest killers. While careless driving accounts for 90% of casualties, the sharp turns and need for improved road structure are rarely discussed. Radical policy shifts are needed to tackle the issue of continuing road casualties and address the true culprits behind the Kingdom’s failing road safety. Ses Aronsakda, a researcher from Future Forum, examines the grim realities of the Kingdom’s approach to road safety and why changing drivers’ behaviour means changing road design.

Buildings toppled and homes lay torn in Indonesia’s West Java, as a 5.6 magnitude earthquake ripped through the city of Cianjur on 21 November. The quakes, which claimed the lives of 635 residents and left thousands more injured and displaced, triggered Indonesia’s government to declare a state of emergency, with fears of further natural disasters to come. But, as volunteer response units rush victims to overcrowded hospitals, the question of whether the country’s disaster response infrastructure can weather the storm lingers over the debris. Globe’s Nisya Kunto provides first hand reporting from the aftermath of the earthquake and covers the urgent calls for improved disaster readiness, before it’s too late.
