As violence worsens on Myanmar's streets, artists are making sure the fallen and imprisoned are known as more than just headlines. Through vibrant comics and portraits, their storytelling is bringing protesters' struggles and sacrifices to an international audience. When Chhim Sithar joined a protest with her former colleagues from Phnom Penh’s NagaWorld casino, she was violently grabbed and arrested by the police. The strike, which has lasted several weeks, is a determined fight to preserve one of Cambodia's remaining independent unions and protect workers already overwhelmed by the pandemic. Globe’s Jack Brook was at the heart of the protest and spoke to NagaWorld employees about their struggle for rights in the face of authorities’ crackdown.

Fighting back against Thailand’s harsh royal defamation laws, young activists are being shackled with a harsh punishment. Electronic monitoring devices are keeping those who have braved speaking out against authority trapped in a cycle of pain and mental distress. Globe’s Beatrice Siviero looks at how this oppressive form of surveillance is restricting activists’ lives and dashing their dreams for the future, as they look forward with bound ankles, but unfettered resolve.

On Saturday, around 700 activists gathered around Manila’s People Power monument, a commemoration of the 1986 mass demonstrations that ousted Ferdinand Marcos Sr. and put an end to his strongman rule. But as his son, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. maintains a grip on the country as president, some are reassessing the legacy of the uprising and the hopes for a new state and regime. Tristan James Biglete was on the ground to cover the protest and spoke to those continuing the fight for democracy in the Philippines.
