Second Life Spotlight - Julala Fairelander
https://community.secondlife.com/news/featured-news/second-life-spotlight-julala-fairelander-r11343/

Today, we’re shining a spotlight on Julala Fairelander, the creative force behind Jinx and Herb & Fable. Over the years, her work has grown from imaginative avatar creation into experiences that bring together creativity, learning, nature, and a strong sense of community. How long have you been in Second Life, and how did you first hear about it? I joined Second Life in 2007 - if I remember correctly, it was around the time that Second Life was featured in an episode of CSI, but I can’t remember exactly what prompted me to join. I repeatedly tried and failed to figure out what it was about for a couple of years, and then in 2009 my employer in education decided to use it as part of some research and development, and my colleague and I logged in to work on building a region for the college and look into whether transferable skills could effectively be taught in a virtual world and transferred to real life. Coming into Second Life with a purpose, I finally got it and have stayed ever since. I would hate to think how many hours of my life have been spent in this virtual world, but I’ve always seen it as much more than “just a game” or “just pixels” - that early research taught me so very much about the educational and therapeutic value of avatar use and virtual spaces. That has been very important in my development over the years in Second Life. You're the creator behind Jinx and Herb & Fable. Tell us more about Jinx, how you got started creating in Second Life, and how your work has evolved over the years. I started creating right from the start, but it was in 2010 that I created my brand Jinx (which was my nickname as a child). Exploring creativity with prims, flexiprims, megaprims, and sculpties initially, along with SL photography and then machinima. I started teaching myself Blender and mesh creation in 2015 from YouTube videos, followed by rigging, animations, skeleton manipulation, and scripting. I’ve loved pushing the boundaries of Second Life creation, and that’s how I came to make the first bento centaur in 2018. From there, the “taur” family grew, not just in product and creature variations but a whole community of amazing, loving people around it - many of whom live and play on the 5 Centauria Community Regions built for them. Today, there are over 15,000 Jinx centaurs (and their variations) out there on the Second Life grid somewhere. Centauria Community - Wednesday Wiggle Creatively, I kept pushing the boundaries of the SL skeleton. From 10-limbed avatars to synchronized bird toes, and even further when animesh came to Second Life, collaborating with other creators in and outside of Second Life, there has been a massive variety of creations along the way. I find the process quite magical when you start with an idea, build it in Blender and texture editing software, put it together in-world with a bit of scripting, and it quite literally comes to life. I became a world-builder for Fantasy Faire in 2021, where, frankly, the magic never ends and I can really give back to all worlds with the amazing fundraising we do for Cancer research and treatment. As a survivor myself and having lost my Dad to cancer, it's much, much more than a shopping event in a virtual world. I’ll challenge anyone who says Second Life isn’t real - in fact, I’ve given presentations at International conferences about “what is reality" and used many examples from the amazing stuff we all do in Second Life! What started as a hobby became an integral part of my income stream and has contributed massively to my real life, not least helping to pay for my home and lifestyle alongside my other professions that have included running animal charities, consultancy work, and working as a psychotherapist. Centauria Community Bard Circle What led you to develop Herb & Fable, and where did the original idea
for the game come from? Despite spending a ridiculous amount of time at a computer screen, I do somehow find the time (I suspect there may be quantum mechanics at work in this…or perhaps sorcery) to connect and share time with nature. I’ve been studying Druidry, the history of witchcraft, and Herbalism for several years now, and I am extremely blessed to live in an amazing landscape in Northern France where I have access to a wonderful variety of flora and fauna. Many individuals, though, can’t connect with nature and/or like-minded communities because of various reasons, including disability, logistics/location, and motivation. These days, rituals, gatherings, and classes can take place online through video, but I’d found these to be somewhat flat and not very immersive. During Fantasy Faire a few years back, I had the inspiration to build an educational game and community that drew upon all of the knowledge and practice I was learning in real life, but also reaching back to that educational research we had done around transferable skills and blending both of these with my knowledge as a therapist. Second Life was the perfect platform for such a project. And so, Herb & Fable was born. Thankfully, I had some experience with PHP and SQL from my time in education and was somehow able to retrieve it from my memory banks and build upon it with LSL scripting and put together a game that really is proving to be something that touches people’s lives in a profound way - which is exactly how I wanted it to be. A game for both seasoned Second Lifers AND for new people who may not have ever been in Second Life - We’ve developed a fun training and welcome area for new users to enter Second Life directly through the Herb & Fable website, with help and support from autonomous activity, from real humans, or a bot option for those who might feel nervous about conversing with people. There are some tutorials to get them familiar with both Second Life and with Herb & Fable, and there are some beautiful gifts from some amazing creators there waiting for them on a dedicated welcome region. One of the things that makes Herb & Fable unique is its connection to real-world knowledge, with plants, recipes, rituals, and other activities designed to teach players as they play. How do you research and develop that side of the experience, and how do you balance education with fantasy and gameplay? It's a good and important question - my own studies continue to inform my work with Herb & Fable and I am very careful not to try to influence people in terms of belief or dogma - Herb & Fable is a very open path that is designed to be welcoming to a large variety of cultures and beliefs. I have started with very safe and common plants and recipes, and there will be a progression expectation before learning about more potentially dangerous plants and practices - safety being paramount - to be informed and have understanding is key to that. I can often access plants from my own land to use as reference for the models and always spend time researching the plants and practices I include in-game. My background is European, but I try to identify and invite parallels from other indigenous cultural crossover. For example, Lil Cinnamon has been trialling 3rd party inclusion to Herb & Fable, bringing her cultural knowledge from Mexico, which has shown to be a beautiful addition - I will be expanding creator collaboration in the next twelve months and look forward to seeing the variety of cultural traditional practices grow. Of course, the learning can be stealth - if someone just wants to enjoy playing the game and isn’t particularly interested in taking the skills to real life. They’ll never know they learned something real - I won’t tell if you don't. A virtual world does have limitations, so there does have to be a balance - if plants took as long to grow in-game as they do in real life - or waiting for compost to mature - it would be a very dull game - so
yes, there has to be some compromise. Where that happens, I try to point it out, and when someone is sad that they got no viable seeds from their yield this time, I’ll share with them all about my failed Tagetas Minuta seeds I gathered in real life last year and got zero yield from this year - it is disappointing, but it's life. And importantly - both for me and for the players - Herb & Fable is based on a “Many people - low cost” model, so things that people need to buy from Herb & Fable are generally very low cost, and that has been recognised and appreciated by the players. I also try to be generous with giving stuff away for free, including the quests and all their associated ingredients and recipes that I’ve prepared for new players. Water is always freely available. Nobody - in any world should have to pay someone for access to water. Excuse the pun, but - you reap what you sow. Herb & Fable - crafting Herb & Fable has grown into an extensive system with growing and harvesting, crafting, quests, badges, rituals, and many other interconnected features. What goes into developing an experience like this within Second Life, and what have been some of the most interesting challenges or discoveries along the way? So much goes into it, and I’m not going to pretend it's easy. But I love learning new things, so while it has been challenging, it's also been fun along the way. I think what I underestimated was how much time I would need to commit to it ... but hey - that’s a familiar story. I’ll give you some examples; For a personal ritual, I need to first write the ritual, which I don’t just pluck out of the air or use AI - I sit with it for a few days/weeks sometimes and put together something from the heart. I will need to record myself narrating it - upload those as little 30-second WAV files and put them together into the ritual flow. There will also be animations that need to be made and timed to the ritual, graphics, ingredients - all researched, meshed, textured, and scripted. Then the backend - there is an extensive database doing many checks each time someone does an activity or recipe - and then the badges - both on the website and in-world badges that need texturing and placing in servers for distribution - and then the educational information - so that players can learn more about each element. Then, if I develop a group gathering from a ritual - I record another version (the group gatherings are always different from the personal rituals), put together props for the environment, and particles/lights/animations for the experience. I have even been known to write and perform a song for group gatherings. It's worth it. Why? Because it changes people’s lives. And that matters. Herb&Fable - pumpkin pie The Herb & Fable community seems to have become an important part of the experience, with players gathering for seasonal rituals, sharing knowledge, helping one another, and forming friendships. How has the community shaped Herb & Fable as it has grown? It was always really about the community - about people. And while I always designed it to be, I won't deny that when I see it have a positive impact, it's still a pleasant surprise and gives me the feels. Truly. People need something positive in their lives - especially in these times of division and despair in the real world. Herb & Fable offers people many things depending on their needs, but connection is always on offer. Whether that be connection to others, to nature, to the self, to spirit (whatever that means to different people). I’ve seen the community grow, and we have over 1200 players now being a year in from exiting beta. And it's a beautiful community. People helping each other to overcome challenges - sharing silent space together - sharing energy at the gatherings - sharing ingredients and helping with the quests. It's a low-expectation environment with a potentially high reward because nobody has to engage with others - Herb & Fable can be

https://community.secondlife.com/news/featured-news/sl-video-creators-groups-october-2026-showcase-at-the-second-life-cinema-r11349/

Calling all machinima fans! The SL Video Creators Group returns with another Director’s Showcase at the Second Life Cinema, this time featuring filmmaker SueSue Sideways. Founded by Jordan Rizzo in 2020, the SL Video Creators Group continues to bring together filmmakers across Second Life to connect, collaborate, and celebrate machinima. Through monthly showcases like this one, the community highlights standout creators and the unique voices shaping virtual storytelling. Join us on Thursday, October 8 at 5pm PT for a spotlight on SueSue Sideways, a filmmaker whose work combines choreography, cinematography, music, and emotion to bring dance machinima to life. Over the years, she has expanded her creative work beyond dance and music videos to include wedding films, promotional projects, and other forms of visual storytelling. In this episode, hosted by Lozza Weymann, SueSue looks back on her journey in Second Life and how she first found her way into machinima. She talks about her love of music, how songs inspire her ideas, and the way choreography, camera work, and storytelling come together in her films. She also shares the challenges she's faced, the lessons she's learned over six years of filmmaking, and advice for creators finding their own style. Where to watch: Inworld: Visit the Second Life Cinema and experience the showcase with friends in a shared virtual theater. Online: Watch simultaneously on the SL Video Creators YouTube channel. Make sure your media and sound settings are enabled for the best experience. In Preferences under Sound & Media, set Auto-Play Media to “Always”. Once you arrive at the Cinema, the media should play. If it does not, toggle the media Play button in the upper right side of your viewer's toolbar. The video will begin automatically at the scheduled start time. Don’t miss this month’s showcase, and be sure to return to the Cinema for new machinima each month.

Trust and Safety Tuesdays: Marketplace Tips and Tricks for Sellers
https://community.secondlife.com/news/featured-news/trust-and-safety-tuesdays-marketplace-tips-and-tricks-for-sellers-r11351/

With the Winter Holiday shopping season around the corner and the Halloween season currently upon us, it is a good time to provide some helpful tips and tricks in navigating the Marketplace. This will be a two part series this month, with this week focusing on creating the best listings for our Marketplace Sellers, and next week we will discuss helpful and safe shopping habits for Buyers. Help Shoppers Get to Know Your ProductsYou’ve put time and care into your creations. Your Marketplace listing is your chance to show shoppers what makes them worth a closer look. A clear photo, a helpful description, and a few thoughtful details can make it much easier for someone to picture your product in their Second Life. Think about the last time you found something you loved on the Marketplace. You probably wanted to know what came with it, whether it would work for you, and what to expect after checkout. Your customers have those same questions. Help shoppers find you. Choose the category and most specific available subcategory that fit your item. That extra step puts your product where people expect to find it. Use a top-level category only when there isn’t a suitable subcategory. A few ground rules help keep the Marketplace welcoming and fair: use only brands, copyrighted content, likenesses, and images you have the rights or authorization to use, and treat other merchants respectfully. Abusive listings, misleading reviews, and rating manipulation aren’t allowed. Keep your listings focused on products and services for Second Life. Real-world goods, harmful content, and advertisements for events, places, or groups aren’t permitted. Offering a demo? Link it to the full product so shoppers can easily take the next step. What Makes a Good Marketplace ListingYou don’t need a complicated sales pitch. Give shoppers a good look at your product and answer the questions they’re likely to have: Let your product be the star. Choose a clear, well-lit image with minimal clutter. If you’ve styled the scene with accessories that aren’t included, say so. Give each item its own name. A distinct, descriptive title helps shoppers tell your products apart. Include useful differences, such as the color, style, or version. Choose keywords with care. Think about the words someone would use to find this particular item. Keep the list focused and skip repetitive or unrelated terms. Make the most of the information section. Fill out the applicable fields and be as detailed as possible about your product. Tell shoppers what’s included, which bodies or other products it works with, the permissions, and any setup steps or limitations. Add details such as dimensions and land impact where relevant, and keep the description easy to scan. Take time to find the right category. The Marketplace has lots of categories and subcategories, so explore the options and choose the most specific fit for your item. That extra care helps shoppers find your product where they expect it. Use a top-level category only when no suitable subcategory is available. Know who you’re talking to. Think about who will use your product and what matters to them. A newer Resident may appreciate simple setup instructions, while an experienced builder may want technical details and licensing information. Write with those needs in mind. Marketplace Maturity RatingsBefore you publish, give the whole listing a quick once-over. The maturity rating covers the product, photos, description, and keywords, so choose the highest rating that applies to any of them. Here’s a quick guide: Rating Examples of content covered General Nonsexual clothing and animations, without exposed genitals or female nipples; mild fantasy violence; language without profanity or sexual references. Moderate Nonexplicit sexual references,
qualifying intimate animations, nonextreme depictions of injury, and alcohol or tobacco references. Adult Anatomical nudity, explicit sexual content or products intended for erotic roleplay, extreme violence, profanity, illegal drug references, and land listings on Adult regions. Moderate and Adult content are for Residents aged 18 or older. Some content is prohibited at every rating. If you’re unsure where your listing fits, check the maturity guidelines before publishing. Keyword Spam and Item SpamIt’s frustrating to search for one thing and get a page of something else. Relevant keywords help customers reach the products they actually want—including yours. Keyword spam is using unrelated terms to appear in more searches. For a pair of blue shoes, describe the shoes’ style and fit. Adding “boat” or “sofa” because you also sell those items would be keyword spam. Keep titles and descriptions relevant, too. Item spam is creating multiple listings for the same product. A different title doesn’t turn an identical item into a new one. Actual variations, such as different colors or sizes, are allowed—just make those differences clear to shoppers. Disabling and Relisting ItemsWant to give an older product a little more attention? Try refreshing its photos or description, or consider a listing enhancement. Disabling and relisting an item simply to gain visibility is treated as misrepresentation under the guidelines. Make product updates through the existing listing. If a listing has been blocked, contact Linden Lab for help with the next steps. Creating a new listing for that blocked item isn’t permitted. A Few More Guidelines to Keep in MindThe Marketplace brings together all kinds of creativity. These ground rules help keep shopping fair and make sure customers know what they’re getting. What’s welcome: Products and services intended for Second Life, with accurate descriptions, appropriate ratings, and the necessary rights to sell them. You can offer genuine color or size variations, link demos to full products, and add properly translated descriptions. A few special cases are worth remembering: Land listings must be free and placed in the appropriate land categories. Service listings must charge at least 50% of the service’s value; an information-only listing doesn’t meet that requirement. Links to your in-world store or personal website are allowed, but don’t direct shoppers to other websites selling Second Life content or currency. What to leave out: Real-world goods or services, digital products intended exclusively for use outside Second Life, event or group advertisements, harmful code, unauthorized branded content, and banned content—even with an Adult rating. Keep reviews fair, too. Don’t use alternate or related accounts to buy or rate your own products, post hostile or false reviews about competitors, or reward only positive reviews. A little care in your listing can save customers a lot of guesswork. For the complete rules and exceptions, keep the Marketplace Listing Guidelines handy as you prepare your next product. Trust and Safety Tuesdays: Marketplace Tips and Tricks for Buyers
https://community.secondlife.com/news/featured-news/trust-and-safety-tuesdays-marketplace-tips-and-tricks-for-buyers-r11354/

With the Winter Holiday shopping season around the corner and the Halloween season currently upon us, it is a good time to provide some helpful tips and tricks in navigating the Marketplace. This will be a two part series this month, with last week’s focusing on creating the best listings for our Marketplace Sellers, and this week we will discuss helpful and safe shopping habits for Buyers. Searching What You Are Looking For The first part of searching for your perfect item is just that: the search! The Marketplace can be a lot to sort through, so knowing how to narrow down your results will be key in making sure you find the right item for your needs. The Second Life Marketplace has 2 general ways to search: by items or by merchants/stores. This way, you can either search for your favorite creator’s store, or you can just search for specific items. You can narrow your search even further by filtering by specific categories, and searching under specific maturity ratings. All listings have the ability to have Keywords, that way a seller’s items come up when you search those specific terms. If you are looking for a specific kind of item, (for example, maybe some really cute boots to match your new holiday party dress), try searching by putting the word of the item you are looking for along with any descriptors, such as color or style. Looking for some full-perm mesh creator tools for your new home build? Well, you can search for exactly that in the “Building and Object Components Category”! Read Listing Descriptions CarefullyBefore clicking the button to purchase an item, be sure to read over the full listing. Second Life Marketplace allows for Merchants to provide a plethora of information about their products, so be sure to read through it all carefully. This means, read through the full description of the item before making your decision. This also includes the items listed permissions, the images representing the item, and also reviews from your fellow Residents. Sometimes, items may also have Demos that you can try before purchasing the full item. Be sure to check for the “Get the demo version” link under the “Buy Now” button, or check the Related Items section at the bottom of the listing page. If an item has a Demo available, it is recommended that you always try the Demo first before purchasing the item itself. Leaving a Constructive ReviewReviewing listings is a great way to show other potential buyers what they are actually purchasing. Whether the item was perfect, or has some flaws that potential buyers should be aware of, leaving a constructive review will help not only when other Residents are looking into buying, but also can help creators improve on their products. It is important that if you are leaving a review that includes criticisms of the product, that you ensure that you keep it constructive. This means, do not just trash talk about the creator, or bring up issues that were already mentioned in the item listing, but bring up legitimate concerns you have about the product that were found after you purchased it. A note: Marketplace reviews are not the place to talk about any personal issues you may have with the seller, or to post about the seller potentially being involved in situations that may violate Terms of Service. If you have concerns about the seller potentially violating ToS, please submit an in-world abuse report on the individual. When to Flag a Listing Occasionally, you may run into listings that violate some part or parts of the Marketplace Listing Guidelines. Should this ever happen, you can flag the offending listing under the appropriate flag type according to the Marketplace Listing Guidelines. There are various reasons to flag a listing. Maybe you purchased an item that was listed as full
permissions, but when you purchased it and opened it in-world, it was actually no copy and no transfer. In this case, you can flag the item as Item Not as Advertised > Item Permissions Not As Advertised. Or, let’s say you searched up a specific key word, but a completely unrelated item shows up in your search. Upon reviewing the item further, under the listing’s Key Words tab, you notice that there are key words listed that have nothing to do with the actual listed item. In this case, you can flag the item as Spam > Keyword Spam, as this behavior can skew search results. A note: Be sure to avoid just randomly flagging listings, or mass flagging a creator’s store due to personal feelings about said creator. Each flag is properly reviewed by the Trust and Safety team, and flags will not be actioned on if the listing does not actually violate any Guidelines. Mass flagging does not mean that a listing will be automatically actioned on and can cause delays in actioning on legitimate flags. Additional TipsThe Second Life Marketplace is vast, so here is some additional information to take with you before you begin your shopping: Purchases made on Marketplace are between the seller and the buyer. Linden Lab is unable to interfere with these transactions. This means, if you are requesting a refund or have issues with the item you purchased, reach out to the creator as Second Life support will be unable to assist in those requests. Creators may leave the platform at any time. Please note that purchasing an item does not guarantee lifetime support. The Marketplace will regularly have banners at the top of the home page advertising Second Life events, item themes (such as holiday themed items), and even potential destinations to visit. Need ideas on decor options or places to visit for the holiday? Check these out! Featured versus Trending Items: Listings shown in “Featured” are items being promoted by creators who have purchased a “Featured” spot. When searching in specific categories, each category will also have their “Featured” listings. Listings shown under “Trending” are popular listings that other Residents have recently been purchasing. Questions? If you have more questions about the topics mentioned in this post, be sure to stop by at the next Trust and Safety User Group meeting on October 20th at 11:00 AM SLT. More information on this meeting and other User Group meetings can be found here.
